Throw a blanket over them
« on: June 07, 2014, 12:35:03 PM »
There are some clusters of great golf courses that either border or are a stones throw away from each other both in the US and abroad. I will submit two entries and would be interested to hear from the finest minds in golf as to some others.

Winged Foot
Quaker Ridge
Fenway
Bonnie Briar
Wykagyl

Shinnecock
NGLA
Southampton
Sebonack

No point adding to the thread if the blanket is a giant one. The idea is courses within a small handful of miles of each other.

Pasatiempo is 46 miles from the lodge at Pebble Beach.

I'll submit,

San Francisco Golf Club
Lake Merced
Harding Park
Olympic Club Lake
Olympic Club Ocean
Olympic Club Cliffs
California Golf Club, 7.4 miles from SFGC
Sharp Park, 7.9 miles from SFGC

Not quite the same quality as some of the above, and two are NLE, but at one point in LA there were contiguous golf courses from around Sunset Blvd to the 10 freeway.

LACC North
LACC South
Westwood Pay-for-Play (Behr)
Hillcrest
Rancho Park
California Country Club

Bel Air is less than a mile from LACC, and Brentwood and Riviera are a few miles.
Golf history can be quite interesting if you just let your favorite legends go and allow the truth to take you where it will.

So drop Pasatiempo, it was a throw in anyway.   :o

Still an amazing list on the Monterey Peninsula.

I like the ones where courses share a border but aren't part of the same ownership.  It makes me wonder about the club interactions.  Are they rivals, friends or both.

Royal Aberdeen/Murcar
Leven/Lundin (there is also Scoonie there)
Western Gailes/Dundonald/Kilmarnock

In the US
NGLA/Shinnecock/Sebonack/Southhampton
ANGC/Augusta CC
NCR/Moraine
Rancho Park/Hillcrest (not the same quality but one where I played regularly...and mentioned while I was typing)

CC of Rochester
Oak Hill
Irondequoit
Monroe

These four courses are only 5 kilometres apart in Rochester, NY and look like a nice cluster for a golf trip for Ross enthusiasts.

Royal Aberdeen/Murcar

I believe Royal Aberdeen used to own the land that Murcar is played over and were paid a kind of peppercorn rent. Not sure if this is still the case, or if not, when things were revised. In the early days of the 19th Century the two courses shared a light/narrow-gauge railway/tram that travelled up the west side of RAGC past Murcar to a quarry a bit further north. You should still be able to see the outline of where it ran to the right as you play holes like the 10th (part), 11th and 12th.

ANGC/Augusta CC

Friends or adverarsies - very interesting one. When was the last time an Augusta CC member was invited to play A National. And I'm not talking about the guy who acts as marker every year at the Masters

I read somewhere that because Augusta encourages fourballs, Augusta CC gets calls on occasion to see if there are any members on property to fill out a foursome.
