That's pretty cool.   I've been playing golf for 60 years all over the country and major parts of the world, and somehow managed to never play one of his courses!

Grew up in SW Kansas and Mariah Hills was our home course. Solid layout with room to play off the tee and consistently good to great bent greens. Wind is such a constant on any course in that part of the world. For a town of 20,000 in such a remote area was a nice facility.

Buffalo Dunes is consistsently rated in top 5 public in Kansas. I have not played in 30 years, but loved the course as a kid. Based on site it could have been a fantastic course...sandy, rolling terrain with lots of interesting native area ie "the gunch".  Not as dramatic as the Nebraska sand hiils or Ballyneal area in NE Colo, but definitely had that feel. Heard it has more of a parkland vibe now because of the maturation of the trees planted in early days of course, but cant say from personal experience.

I think someone is writing a book on Frank Hummel and apparently contacted my club in Colorado Springs-Colorado Springs CC-and advised that Hummel designed the original 9 holes that opened in 1954-1955. Dick Phelps out of Denver added 9 holes and changed much of the routing of the original 9. The course would not make anyone's top 1000 list...

Is Aspen GC the course right on the edge of town when you're coming in from Glenwood Springs? If it is I remember it being a fun course, nothing special but an enjoyable time.

Sam, that's the one. It's on your left, when coming from Glenwood.

As I am about to post a photo tour of one of his courses, Jawbone Creek, I was surprised to find this thread by searching on Jawbone.
You will be able to get my take on the course when the tour goes up.

Course thread is up at http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,62391.0.html

Finding any more information on his work, isn't easy. I've tried, because I too have golfed a number of these courses.

I play one of his courses, that isn't listed as a credit. Odd. Especially, since his work there was stellar.

Other courses I'm familiar with have been altered with ideas as bad as bathtub ponds, green side, where a bunker use to reside. Most of these rural courses likely had little guidance after Mr. Hummel handed over the keys. i.e. No head pros etc.

I suspect Mr. Hummel was much better at the Art, than any of his course's current iterations would evidence. Too many ill-conceived changes by too many cooks spoiling the broth.

One good thing about it, the courses are not crowded.
