Teeing off on hole 7 before playing hole 6
« on: June 10, 2017, 09:36:04 PM »
At Field Club of Omaha, after holing out on the 5th, you tee off on the 7th, then proceed to play the 6th.  Once you finish the 6th you walk to the fairway on the 7th, find your ball, and play on.The 6th hole, a par 3, parallels the 7th hole, a par 5, with both tees next to each other just off the 5th green.  If you played in order you'd obviously have to backtrack.

FCO has 6 road crossings on a tight property.  Regardless of its limitations, I've never heard of another course doing this.  Has anyone heard of something similar?

You do this at 16/17 at St Louis CC.  You don't have to, but I was told it's what most members do.

Harbor Point Golf Club does this for 17/ 18. It's not the original routing, and while I consider it a flaw in the routing, there isn't a viable solution to change the situation.

Original routing by David Foulis, 1896.

When Sleepy Hollow 15 was a par 5, you teed off on 15 after you hit your second shot on 14 to save walking back 150 yards.
Caused a real problem in qualifying for Club Championship one year.

And they do this at SiwanoyCC on 8/ 9.

Tualatin CC (Egan, 1912) used to have member do this on 8/9. That was wiped out in a remodel.

By the way, this is a quick DQ. The first decision under Rule 1.

Niagara Falls CC does this at 16/17 (common for this type of oddity?). 16 is a par three that heads north, while 17 is a par four that heads east. You hit both tee shots (assuming no one occupies drive zone on 17), play the par three, then cut over to 17 fairway.

It's like kissing your bride the night before the wedding. Seems like 17 and 18 at Tobacco Road begs for this solution. It's a God awful empty gesture.

Watch the Women's US Open at Olympia Fields. They won't be able to do it like the members who tee off 6, tee off 7, finish 6, finish 7. The women will actually have to follow the rules. You don't want to cross the USGA! Isn't that right Dustin?

If you cross the PGA, you get disqualified. If you cross the USGA, you win the Open.

With respect to 8/9 at Siwanoy, a member informed me that the first USGA rules decision forbid players from teeing off on 8, teeing off on 9, finishing 8, and finishing 9.

At Rye it is quite in order to hit your tee shot to the second hole (par three) and then stop off on the walk to the green to drive off on the par four third. Enhances pace of play, which, in a club where three hours is a slow round, is a high priority!

There's an example somewhere near the turn at Mere, but rounds there are 5 hours, so who cares about saving time!

Ssouthview in Minneapolis has a par three on the back nine that players hit to when no one is around, then they hit their tee shots on the previous hole. The club discourages it, however.

Popular at Deal when it's quiet is to tee off the 6th as you pass by playing the 5th and in foursomes your partners tee off 15 while you tee off 14. Both save walking back from greens to tees.

Thanks for the responses.  Field Club could be rerouted/reconfigured to avoid the little cluster, but in a case like the SLCC routing, the 16/17 confluence seems like a conscious decision made by MacDonald and it's fine.

I'm trying to decide where the line between quirky and stupid is drawn (with regard to this particular situation) and it seems to be on a case by case basis.  Same as it ever was.

At Golspie you can tee off at the 6th then the 7th so you can walk to the 6th green, hole out and then straight up the 7th fairway to save the walk back.

This drives me nuts.   We should just leave two carts at the sixth green and those who are too lazy to walk back can take a cart!

Pelham CC in New York has a similar set of tee box gymnastics, but with a half twist.  I may misremember the hole numbering, but I believe you tee off on number 4, then tee off on number 6 (both of which share an elevated tee box).  When you complete 4, you play number 5 back towards the tee boxes for 4/6 and upon holing out, avoid the walk across the river and up the hill by heading directly to your tee shot on number 6.

This only works when the course is relatively quiet.

Although they're doing or have done some work recently at Lakewood Country Club in suburban Denver so this may have changed, as of the last time I played there you hit your second shot into the par 4 second hole then teed off on the par 5 third hole before finishing the second.
