Paul,

Thanks for the tip. I've just looked at Seans photo-tour plus the photos etc on the CH website. Does look my kind of place.

£49/weekday, £40 with a Surrey County Card. Not a great choice of Open Competitions, in fact a pretty poor choice.

An interesting aside on the CH website 'Please note that Adizero golf shoes are banned from the course.'

Mark,

Stop Press - In the very short time since your post things have changed - you can now only buy a one bedroom flat in Surrey for the price of a village in Yorkshire! :)

Sean,

I'll PM you.

Day 1 Walton Heath (Old and New)
Day 2 Sunningdale (Old and New)
Day 3 Royal St. Georges and Deal
Day 4 Wentworth (East and West)
Day 5 Queenswood and St. Georges Hill
Day 6 Rye and Swinley Forest
Day 7 Berkshire (Red and Blue)
Day 8 Woking

Just to come back on this. Trip just completed last week. I think it really worked out perfectly. I don't feel like anything was missed. Both of us were in good enough shape to manage 45 holes at Berkshire on Day 7.

We had an amazing lunch at Rye after our early round which was great, then experienced the only challenge of the trip which was getting back to Swinley in the mid afternoon. our average round took about 2:45 which left us plenty of time to rest and eat but the days were long. We had great weather with only a couple showers which helped speed up play of course and most of the courses we almost had to ourselves. Swinley on Friday evening was amazing as we were alone out there rhodo's were in bloom so from an aesthetic point of view that was magical.

Sure playing 36 or more at each course would be great but that's just not an option for us. In all a great way to do this trip and I have the entire week to get rid of the blisters on my feet before our annual 36 hole back tee event called fittingly the British Challenge on Saturday.

Oh and my favorite course of the trip...Deal

Pending DD's response I'll give my own take on "why Deal". I love Royal Cinque Ports for several reasons, given here in no particular order:

--The variety of lengths and types of holes, not at all a long slog of Par 4's as some links courses can seem.

--The perfectly rolling terrain, just the right amount of ground movement for a member's (or frequent visitor's) course.

--I've always found it in good to great condition and while the rough is often a bit ball-eating, I've never had a round there turn into half a day of tramping around looking through long grass for mine and other balls.

--The town of Deal is probably my favorite spot in England to spend a week, although London would be a very close second.

--I know people at Deal and they're fun to play with, plus the club itself is very accommodating although it is very busy with member+visitor play in peak season.

Having said all that, I must admit that Deal is simply among the runners-up for my favorite course in England. Probably the top of that list but its near neighbor Royal St. George's is in the running for the best course in the world as far as I'm concerned. Certainly the course I most long to return and play again among the 15-20 I've played in UK. But my saying Deal is not the equal of Sandwich is NOT a knock on the former.

One of the beauties of two-ball play is that the chances of having to search for a ball on any given hole are immediately halved!

True that, Scott.

A course with exactly the presentation I found at Deal last September, played like my usual four-ball game back home, would have potentially been a very frustrating experience of endless searches.

That said, there was one year I was over there and Princes rough had really gotten away from them. Combined with it being a windy day our little two-ball was still over 3-1/2 hours and between us we lost probably three sleeves of balls. I've not played Royal Cinque Ports and had that bad a time with the rough.

Gents, why Deal?

First of all I have to say it was a great trip and I'd love to play any single one of those courses again and if I were living there and lucky enough to be a member of any of them I would consider myself very fortunate.

That out of the way:

1. I'm a huge fan of links golf, it's by far my favorite type of golf. So huge "links" bias.
2. Variation. No two holes were similar at Deal in my opinion.
3. I love having to "Deal" with wind and elements - back to links type golf on this one.
4. Undulations in the fairways, how often do you end up with a flat lie there? I love this aspect of the game at Deal, way more creativity needed to pull off shots.
5. Amazing green surrounds and contours. Perhaps my favorite part of the game since it's one of the only parts I consider myself quite good at ie my scoring is usually done around the greens, I love it when this is challenging and requires a high level of creativity and usage of different clubs.
6. Atmosphere, finally I'm but a simple guy who grew up in the country, Deal is all about the golf as far as I can tell. This is one of the things I love about Noordwijkse as well although we lack any social aspects of club life which is a minus.
7. Fast and firm conditions - another links characteristic but to be fair RCP was completely under water two months ago if I can believe the photos Mark showed us. You could see areas that had been under water but the course was still in what I'd call great shape, especially considering that.

Ventured into town on the waterfront after for a bite to eat since the club house restaurant was already closed. That was lovely as well as Brett states. Although I wouldn't rate a golf course based on club house or the town it's in.

David, that is one awesome trip.   England is remarkable for its depth, and is so underrated by the golfing masses.  I'd rather play #50 in England than #50 in the US any day.

Wayne, that will be an awesome trip. I just played Royal Portcawl in March which is one of my favorite links courses. Pennard is also spectacular as long as you can look through the turf conditions. Woking was in great shape and is a blast, West Sussex is excellent as is Berkshire.

Morfontaine we are hitting beginning of September but have high expectations.

I will try and warm up Bill in The Netherlands first assuming he's coming here first and then going to France and not the other way around.

James, will do, Fergal actually played 8 days straight before joining me on Tuesday evening of our trip. He went up to Scotland first after a visit home in Ireland and played Trump, Cruden Bay, Castle Stuart and Royal Aberdeen.
