James Braid. New book.
« on: May 09, 2014, 08:54:24 AM »
At last the 1996 book has been updated and is now subtitled “and his Four Hundred Golf Courses.”
I’ve been searching for the original without luck for the past decade so this is most welcome. John Moreton has updated his original with the help of Iain Cumming.

It’s a chronological run thought with many surprises.  E.g. who knew that Knowle Park chose Abercrombie rather than Braid.  His proposed course ran over the same ground but in the opposite direction!

I just received it today in the post, and with a nice memoir at the beginning from J Hamilton Strutt, this looks like an essential purchase.

Hopefully others will chime in once they’ve read the book.

Can be purchased here.

I just received my copy of this through the post. On a quick flick through it looks very comprehensive and I'm looking forward to reading it.

It does however contain my number one frustration in publishing... the miss titled photo! I naturally stopped at a few pictures of Brora that are titled 8th fairway, 2nd green and 18th green. However, the pictures appear to me to be of the 1st fairway / 18th approach, 18th green, and 18th green from a little further away!  :o ::) Nevermind, I'm sure the rest of the book will make up for it!

Cheers,

James

A lovely colour photo on the dust jacket of the 9th green and 16th fairway at St Enodoc. I was very disappointed in the book however as the information on St Enodoc, which I know plenty about left me very confused as I struggled to follow the text as well as some of the information was just plain wrong. As a result I question the rest of the book but still possibly a useful reference book.

As someone who goes delving into archives and old copies of newspapers for course info I have to say it's very impressive. Sure I've found a lot of stuff that doesn't chime with my own knowledge and I suspect that part of it is because they partly rely on club histories which are generally fairly ropey. They do however tend flag up where they get the info from and ask for any updates/corrections so definitely a pass plus from me.

Also liked the way the book is presented with list of courses in chronological order.

Was there something in the new book that has linked James Braid with Saint Andrews, New York ?

I was surprised to see it appear on the Reciprocal List of the Association of James Braid courses for 2014.
