Why not Gleneagles ?
« on: May 02, 2014, 11:25:15 AM »
Now that Donald is playing Golf Monopoly, where else in the UK is he likely to go after. Gleneagles has been available to buy for about as long as Turnberry if not longer. Skibo Castle might be another with a swanky hotel and high end golf course. Or what about Princes, is that not a private course ? Surely the Donald touch might give it another shot at the Open.

What do you think ?

Niall,

Never really considered it before but in many ways it would seem to fit. I'm not even sure I'd be too upset with him moving in on Gleneagles either. It would seem a neater fit, particularly now that Nicklaus has build a second rate track to host the Ryder Cup on. He could add his crass fountains to that particular part of the property and probably no one would be too upset.

Perhaps he feels the site of a USA victory would be a far bigger source of increased revenue than the site of an American defeat and is waiting accordingly. Or perhaps he's not that bright.

For all that I dislike the guy, clearly he does like proper golf so I guess the allure of the links is a factor.

Would it make more sense, in terms of diversity, for him to acquire a property in England or Wales

The only property that would make any real sense is Wentworth. None of the top courses in England or Wales is proprietary. Wentworth - a very high profile, high end club, would be logical. But it has been up for sale for several years, and is at the moment in the midst of being acquired by Chinese investors. If Trump had wanted to buy it, he has had plenty of opportunity.

Queenwood would have been perfect for Mr. Trump's customer base, but Mr. Green beat him to it.

Mr. Trump brings to much attention for Queenwood. They turned down the Prince for the same reason!

He could also buy Moonah Links in Australia - making him the 3rd owner in 15 years.

Adam - can Wentworth make money on a multi hundred million investment? Princes would make sense if he wants an Open and an English base.

Not sure that the geography relative to other courses would be a guiding factor given that the UK relatively speaking is such a small island. I think more a factor is the type of property, its specific location in relation to transport ie. accessability beyond the local market, and the opportunity to add value. I appreciate that just sticking Trump on the name seems to work for most of his US property but not sure what added value that will bring in the UK. Time will tell on that.

Your post reminds me of the old joke about local who was the butt of jokes with his pals, who was bemoaning to a stranger about the nickname he had been given. The local tells the stranger about all the selfless and wonderful things he'd done but because he'd shagged one sheep.....

I'm sure you've heard it better told than here however the point is how many waterfalls, fountains etc has he put into his golf courses ? I don't know the answer but do wonder if it's all that many.

Niall,

I was thinking in terms of the "join one, play them all" concept and having courses available to travelers going to London, Scotland and Ireland.

It's a concept with more appeal as you add to your stable of courses, especially if that stable adds good to great courses.
