Wow, I never thought Boonville CC would be mentioned on GCA!  I played there many times as it was the practice course for my high school in my freshman year.  Just basic golf IIRC.  Need to get back there after a 37 year absence!

I was there at BCC 37 years ago (as a one year old) - my dad was greenskeeper and my mom ran the clubhouse for quite a few years in the 70s/80s.  I promise my family fully understands the shortcomings (and charm) of that place!

This discussion has driven me to the Clearcrest website; I used to play the 9 holer a bunch as a junior, only played the new layout once several years ago.  Nigel, to the best of my recollection, the original 9 hole routing is as follows (for what it's worth):

#1 - same as new #1
#2 - NLE par 5 playing from #12 tee to #13 green
#3 - #14
#4 - NLE par three that played up toward #17 tee
#5 - #17
#6 - #9
#7 - #10
#8 - #11
#9 - #18

Probably wasted way too much of my life on that little exercise.

I think you nailed it Reed!

I know the family that used to own Clearcrest.  Unfortunately the wife of the couple passed away in the last year or so.

Joe, I think Oak Meadow and Clearcrest have both been struggling for a couple years. We are probably one too many country clubs for our size town. Victoria National was definitely a game changer in the market.

Nigel - if you ever play Boonville again, something to look for architecturally is the remnants of the original nine 9 holes that existed in the 50s / 60s.  The original 9 existed on what are now holes 4-9; you probably noticed the old green site in 9 fairway in the second landing area.  It always fascinates me to play an older course and run across hints of an earlier routing.
Well we've probably beaten BCC to death, maybe sometime we can do a hole by hole comparison of Helfrich and Fendrich?  ;)

Funny. I actually think there are some good holes at both Helfrich and Fendrich.

Hey Reed,
Welcome!  We need more Indianapolis locals, glad you're on board.

I'm guessing you've played quite a bit in our area....what's your favorite course in town (private or public)?

And I too love French Lick, just a really wild and cool course.

Thanks for the welcome Josh.  I unfortunately haven't played nearly as many courses as I would like in the Indy area.  I moved here a few years ago, but work, wife, house, baby, and lack of playing partners have cut back how much golf I get in.  Of the privates I've played, I like Meridian Hills the best (kinda partial, since I work there); I think Sagamore and Woodland are good, not a huge Wolf Run fan.  Favorite publics are Trophy Club and Heartland Crossing, but still need to see The Fort, Plum Creek and get up to Attica to play Harrison Hills.  Hopefully I'll get out to play more this summer.

I agree, really like the back 9 at Helfrich.  I could never figure out how to score well at Fendrich.

Put Plum creek last in that mix. Add Rock Hollow in too.
