Have you guys played Elks Run, a Greg Norman design in Batavia?  It's really quite good, used to be easy overpriced during the late 90's and early 2000's, but it's reasonable now and usually in good shape when I play it.  Nice bunkering, elevation change, natural areas, and no houses make for a pleasant round.

Yes, played US AM qualifier there in early 2000's 2 years in a row.  Is the course walkable for everyday play?  They had to shuttle us on one hole on the back.  I heard Norman had a contract that they had to charge more than area publics for X amount of years, which hurt them.  It's a good track.

I'm pretty sure they don't allow walking there, it would really be hard between certain greens and tees.  Interesting, I had heard the course was run by the mob back then...have to love the rumor mill.  It is a good track, and under new ownership now by someone who owns another golf course in the area, so hopefully the rates stay down and the conditions stay steady.

Matt, welcome to GCA from a fellow Ohioan and Miami alum! When did you graduate from Miami? I have a good friend who played on the team a few years ago. I graduated in 2000 and now live in Columbus. I also grew up in NE Ohio so as a Browns and Indians fan, I won't hold your sports teams against you. I also have a new baby so I completely understand the challenge of now finding time to play golf.

If you're ever up in the Columbus(ish) area and are interested in playing, shoot me a message. I'd be happy to host you at Springfield, and there are several friends here in Columbus who'd happily host a fellow Miami guy too.

Camargo is on my bucket list too!

Brian,
Nice to see several Miami alums on here!  I played back in 2003-2004 for the Middletown branch.  Oxford had just got a new coach and would not allow open tryouts, so I took my talents elsewhere.  I was actually recruited by Baldwin-Wallace up in your neck of the woods.  I graduated in 2007.  I won't hold your teams against you either, we are gluttons for punishment in that regard.

Playing at Springfield would be great, I will definitely take you up on that soon.  Favorite course(s) in the Columbus area?

My favorites in Columbus are Scioto and The Golf Club. Also really like Columbus CC and Brookside. My absolute ohio favorites are up in NE Ohio--Canton Brookside, Kirtland and Canterbury.

Scioto and The Golf Club are definitely Ohio Bucket Listers for me.  Have you made it over to Eaglesticks in Zanesville?  Not many courses I will drive 4 1/2 hours round trip in a day to play, but it really is a gem.  Being from NE Ohio, what are your thoughts on The Quarry and Little Mountain?

I've played Eaglesticks a few times, but it's been several years since I last played it. I always enjoyed it (along with Longaberger...but don't tell anyone on GCA). The Quarry is close to my parents in Canton, so I've played it a couple times with friends from home and really had fun there. I've never been up to Little Mountain. Another good public in the Cleveland area to check out is Fowler's Mill--early Pete Dye with three good nines.

Longaberger does get a bad rap, but there are no homes, the scenery is superb for the middle of Ohio, and the hole variety on the front is something I always loved.  Sure it's an Arthur Hills course, but it is probably his best other than the Quarry nine at Bay Harbor.  I haven't played any in the Cleveland area, so it sounds like I need to make a trip up there.

Matt,

I'd put Red Hawk in Findlay, OH over longanburger for A Hills course.  I haven't played in Cleveland either.

How many people on GCA that have actually played Longaberger hate it? It seems like the property could have produced something better, but it's still really good as it is. I think a lot of its bad rap just comes from how expensive and hard to get on it used to be, and it gets a lot of pot shots just because Art Hills designed it. It's really quite good though.

Matt, have you played Granville? It's just down the road from Longaberger and a very good public Ross aside from an embarrassingly bad stretch of holes that were "redesigned" to make room for houses a decade or two ago. It's not great, but it has a few great moments.

I'll second the Fowler's Mill recommendation, although I played it in a downpour with Chris Sturges and we had to quit after 9 holes so I could get to a work engagement. The nine I played were very good.

Always kick myself for not playing Granville.  I don't hate Longanburger, but I didn't care for it, and it wasn't hard to get on the day I played.  Remember a few holes, but don't consider it good.  It was cool Jim Furyk was playing a few groups of head of us with his father in law.

I have not gotten up to Red Hawk yet.  Have heard very good things though.  Granville has been on my list of places to play, just have not gotten around to it.  Unfortunately the past few times I've golfed in the Columbus area it has been at The Phoenix Golf Links.

It's a shame about Furyk, Ben. The scenery at Longaberger is really quite nice when his swing isn't marring the view.

As for Phoenix Links, you really can't beat the location if you're looking for an easy road trip from Cincinnati, so at least it has that going for it.

The Phoenix has a great view of downtown Cbus. It also has some interesting smells depending on wind and/or temperature, owing to the sewage treatment plant if the wind is out of the north and the landfill that the course is built upon if it's a warm day.

For a faux link course built on a landfill, it could have been really trashy (pun intended) that's for sure.  Couple of decent holes on the front, #17 and #18 are pretty strong finishing holes, and yea nice views and the low rates make for an okay round, especially for a bachelor party.

Welcome Matt.  Let me know when you want to play Ballyhack Golf Club.  Might I suggest Kinloch Golf Club as well.

Thank you, it's great to be a part of this.  A Ballyhack/Kinloch trip would be fantastic sometime.  I have been itching to get over there for years now.  The work you did at these courses looks phenomenal, it should be a real treat.
