Atlanta area golf trip?
« on: April 16, 2014, 12:21:00 PM »
My friends from college and I get together every year in the late summer for a golf trip.  Someone mentioned recently about going to Atlanta the week of the Tour Championship at East Lake.  I have never really talked to anyone that went to the Atlanta area for a golf trip, and I did not find much in the way of direction through a forum search.  Wanted to see if anyone had recommendations, high and low dollar in the Atlanta area, or if I would be wasting my time.  Thanks.

Not that I recommend it as part of an Atlanta trip but in an attempt to preempt GCA.com, you should go to Palmetto.

I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

The best Palmetto recommendation ever was from a thread where a guy was posting that he was in Buckhead and had no car and within 10 posts somebody recommended Palmetto.

How close to Atlanta would you want to be?  Cuscowilla and Reynolds Plantation are about 75 miles from East Lake.  I though Cuscowilla was terrific and Reynolds was fine.

Honestly, there aren't great public options around Atlanta.  If you have some access to private courses, it will open up your options a bit.  If you're dead set on Atlanta and public, I would think about doing a couple days at Cuscowilla.

Ah, beat me to it Carl.

The best golf in Atlanta is private.

Peachtree,
East Lake,
Atlanta Athletic Club (Riverside and Highlands),
Ansley Settindown,
Atlanta Country Club,
Rivermont.

Those are all worth a play, but they are all private.  If you belong to a club, have your pro call to try to set something up.

Good public golf might require a car trip;

Achasta in Dahlonega is good (Nicklaus course in the North GA Mountains...great in the fall...beautiful) Semi-Private
Cuscowilla in Eatonton is excellent (Coore and Crenshaw on Lake Oconee)
Arrowhead Pointe is a muni in the boonies...but cheap and really good.
The Georgia Club is good enough to play...but again, a bit of a hike.

Peach tree is fantastic.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I agree with the others that most of the really good golf here is at the private clubs, but there is some really good public and semi-private clubs here.

Just some suggestions.....

Town Lake Hills, Bridge Mill, Stone mountain, Mystery Valley, Echelon, Reunion, Chateau Elan, The Frog, are just a sampling of what I consider good to excellent local venues. If you don't mind driving a bit, Callaway Gardens has some great golf, and to the west of the city, there are tons of courses in the Lake Oconee area.

Good luck in planning your trip!

Hawks Ridge in Ball Ground is supposed to be nice. I think 45-60min north.

I thought The Frog was pretty fun.

I believe that I read that Cuscowilla is redoing their greens this summer. That is no indication of the current quality.

I recently moved an Atlanta trip to Memphis/Tunica. It was a perfect choice. River Bend Links is the best value I have ever played. TPC Southwind is a great tour stop venue. Beal Street, Graceland, casinos food and music. Four days all inclusive at less than the alcoholic rate of $200 a day.

Atlanta's southside has the best public options;

Summer Grove - Newnan - Ok I'm biased because it was my first design, but it's a very enjoyable course with zoysia fairways, short grass bermuda collars, and undulating bent grass greens. It's got several good short par fours which beg you to hit driver close to the green and a couple of high risk, high reward par fives. Priced below $50 with cart www.summergrovegolf.com

Crystal Lake - Hampton, GA - I've never played, but everyone recommends the Dennis Griffiths designed course. Development course but looks to have some interesting holes. http://www.crystallakecc.com/-golf-course

Planterre Ridge - Peachtree City, GA - Private but accessible. It's been a few years since I played, but they recently flooded a +1000 acre lake along side the golf course and some consider it the best course on the South Side. The resort style design, makes the course course fun to play, and it's the most popular course of the Cannongate network. http://canongategolf.com/

If I can be of any service setting these up, please feel free to reach out.
