Oaks Country Club (Tillinghast) Remodel
« on: April 17, 2014, 02:57:24 PM »

"The Oaks Country Club in west Tulsa, a 1922 design by A.W. Tillinghast, will begin renovations of all 18 greens in June. Bill Bergin, a golf course architect from Atlanta and high school teammate of Bob Tway, will oversee the renovation, which will include the lengthening of three holes and a new six-hole par-3 course"

A neat little course, one of 2 Tillinghast designs in Tulsa, hopefully they are bringing some chainsaws.   Never heard of Bill Bergin.   Rees Jones recently remodeled the other Tillinghast course Tulsa Country Club.

Ronald,

for better or worse, that is always a factor in selecting your golf designer.  I worked at a club for years, then the pro decided he should give the job over to a guy he played college golf with.

There are so few differences between designers (galls me to say it, but true) that its often the little things that make the difference in being selected.  I suspect the biggest factor was NOT using Rees to avoid two Tillie/Rees courses in the same market.  Bill has a nice resume of restorations (I think, only played one of his) and is qualified to do the job.  Others were, too, but like I say, they have to decide somehow.

Only played one Bergin course, Chariot Run in southern Indiana. It's a solid casino course, but not spectacular.

From the linked article, it sounds like they went through a detailed hiring process to hire BB:

"Bergin was one of six architects considered and Oaks Head Professional Rick Reed said simply had the best plan for the venerable course.

Greens will be removed down to the gravel core and rebuilt with new drainage and mix. The greens will be restored to bent grass, though the variety is still under discussion.

Bergin is studying old photos and records to try to restore the greens and bunkers to as much of the size and style that Tillinghast used as possible."

Apparently this is his 2nd Tillinghast course, having worked on or is working on the Johnson City Country Club in Tennessee.

He worked with Bob Cupp for a while.

Good luck to him.

The Tulsa area old timers scorecard so far...

Southern Hills - Maxwell - Keith Foster restore
Hillcrest Country Club - Maxwell - Tripp Davis restore

Tulsa Country Club - Tillinghast - Rees Jones restore
Oaks Country Club - Tillinghast - Bill Bergin restore
