Pat,

I think we're talking about all of the short grass surrounding the greens, before reaching the rough (yes, I insist on calling it "rough"). So on some holes that can be not much more than the fringe but others it can be out 10-12 yards or more from the edge of the putting surface.

I'd think the immediate fringe within a couple feet of the hole is mowed conventionally.

At TOC it makes no odds which way its cut, its only done that way so you don't have stripes. At Augusta they are basically doing it one way also. Why is any more difficult in Augusta than St Andrews, especially given that they will be mob-handed in terms of staff during the tournament ?

Actually, forget I asked you that question, and perhaps one our greenkeeper/superintendent friends will respond instead.

Brent, I think of "fringe" as the cut that circles the green that's cut lower than the fairway but higher than the putting surface
