Howard,

Thanks for the graphic.

It would be really great is someone skilled in graphics could add the contour/slope into the schematics of the greens

It is really amazing to see those hole locations when you think about the severity of the greens.  If #5 is an easy one, it's probably the only easy one of the day.

Incidentally, I had dinner with someone on The Masters committee a few months ago [whose cover I won't blow].  He was describing how they've got the greens mapped down to the foot, so they know EXACTLY which hole locations will produce more or fewer birdies.  Just moving the hole location a foot or two is all the difference between balls funneling INTO the hole and balls just missing ... and they use that knowledge to predict scoring and fine-tune the setup to get what they want.

A fascinating insight, and thank you for sharing it with us Tom, but a disturbing one as well, for our originally pretty simple favourite game of stick and ball and hole has become just sooo damn sophisticated and clever. Time to play Painswick with no bag, a few hickories and a old ball found in a bush and half chewed by a dog.

I see it at -4 at the moment:

Tom,

I remember the contrast between the time Augusta took to rebuild 14 and that taken by the R&A and Links Trust to mangle TOC 11. (I guess when you don't want to take any chances your error someday will be erased, you don't map contours. And since you don't care about what was there you only need a few days to polish off the work.)

Here is a fascinating article detailing the four-month rebuild of ANGC 14 AND the amazing sensing and surveying technologies the club uses for its greens:
http://www.masters.com/en_US/news/articles/2013-04-08/201304071365375348177.html

Despite the enormous resources, care, and technology deployed by the club, some veteran golfers said the club was unable to rebuild the green exactly:

I'm sure a talented person would accommodate in exchange for your using only black type for a full year.

Of course, in a rare show of modesty (or was it a typo), Pat asked only to be acknowledged as the most astute architectural observer that BRYAN knows, not the most astute observer that ANYONE knows.

Nice break.

I read it that Pat wanted Doak to acknowledge it...

In any event, it was a helluva effort Bryan. Only problem is you just gave Pat more ammo!

Tom,

Would you employ that system to capture green contours where you wanted to move or recreate a green ?

Patrick:

Bryan is new here so I don't know what he can wager that will interest you, but I know what you should wager:

If the hole plays under par today, no more green ink for the next 30 days.  :)

OK, but if it plays at par or above, what do you lose ?

How about declaring for 30 days that Pat Mucci is the most astute amateur architectural student that you know  ;D

I would be happy to take the wager myself, except I haven't seen where the pin is, and I suspect the players are unprepared for it.

Patrick:

Well played.  Good thing I didn't take the bet!  But, it was fun to check back on the scoreboard periodically through the day to see whether you were right.  Did you expect it to be that close?

Tom,

I did NOT expect it to be that close.

Here was my thinking:

The entire field was playing today, those that were playing well, those playing poorly and those playing average.
I didn't think there would be many eagles, but I did think that there would be doubles and maybe worse, hence I didn't think that under par would be the average.  I was very surprised, but, I also felt that tee location would be a major factor, but I had no way of determining where they would be, so I rolled the dice.

Now, if you asked me to take that bet on Saturday or Sunday I wouldn't take it due to the refined quality of the reduced field

I'll have to check out the numbers, but I'm sure there's at least a player or two I should be mad at. The problem with that hole is if you drive it in the bunker, you can't get to the green. I'm guessing a lot of the bogies and others came from that scenario. Oh yeah, and...

Bryan,

I thought that tee location and those bunkers would be a factor.

Those bunkers are huge and deep.

If the golfer hooks the ball, large numbers also come into play.

But, I didn't expect it to be so close.

Good analysis on your part.

Pretty much exactly the same way I thought about it.  Take out the mid-ams and the guys playing lousy, and it would have been a different story.

Many years ago, Scott Verplank said something to me I'll never forget:  he said that people who watch golf on TV overestimate the pros' games, because we only see them the weeks they're playing well.

I just went back and double-checked:  the guys who made the cut were 3-under on #5 yesterday.

That Pat Mucci is a hell of an analyst.

Or, a really good gambler.
