Watch the pin on #5 today
« on: April 11, 2014, 08:07:12 AM »
If I saw what I think I saw on the golf channel this morning, Friday's pin is actually below the ridge on the right. If that's true, the hole will play very easy and I guarantee you it plays under par for the day (for the first time in history). They've never put it there in the Masters before. You may even see an eagle or two today. Should be fun.

Bryan,

I'll take that bet on under par.

What shall we wager ?

Patrick:

Bryan is new here so I don't know what he can wager that will interest you, but I know what you should wager:

If the hole plays under par today, no more green ink for the next 30 days.  :)

I would be happy to take the wager myself, except I haven't seen where the pin is, and I suspect the players are unprepared for it.

OK, but if it plays at par or above, what do you lose ?

How about declaring for 30 days that Pat Mucci is the most astute amateur architectural student that you know  ;D

Patrick, I was watching the coverage this morning and they showed the pin on #5 being on 11 from the front and 5 from the right. If that is true and it's below the ridge, you're gonna see a bunch of birdies and the hole will play under par. If I'm wrong, I'll change my signature line this month to "Patrick Mucci has forgotten more about the Masters than I'll ever know". If I'm correct, you post the rest of the month in pink?

Tom, I think you're right that not a player in the field has practiced putting there. The reason I say it plays under par for the day is because you'll see a ton of shots very close to the hole. There's a huge backstop and a sideboard on the right that will funnel everything to the hole. I honestly think someone will make 2 there today.

Now, if the golf channel had the spot wrong, I take it all back.

I saw the pin sheet, and it shows 11 on, 5 from the right, so you are correct.

The all-time scoring average on #5 is 4.26, with the lowest year 4.06 (2001) and highest year 4.48 (1956).

I don't know the course well, so do not have a strong view, but these stats would have me leaning toward over par for the day.

Is the front right really that much easier to access?  Sure will be fun to watch - seems to me this is one of the best greens on the course.

Terribly easy pin.  Most putts will be uphill from the front left side of the green.  Will be played into a quartering right-to-left southwest breeze.  Good call #68.  If they're using this pin...hopefully they'll go top left too.

Come on Doug, I was trying to look brilliant. You know they're gonna kill that pin. If they use the back left pin, I'll bet on the scoring will be nearly 5.

This will be fun to watch.

So far, No.5 is at +1. Last-place Mr. McCoy just doubled it.

I've always thought they should use the member tee if they use the top left hole location.  It would still play well over par.

Good call. I don't think they ever will because that pin position's got a real chance of getting away from them and causing a train wreck.

Does the front right pin get used for member play on a regular basis? Back left?

I have always wanted to see that green pinned on the front which should indeed be great fun to watch!  However, I would say that the tee shot is the most daunting aspect of #5...as fantastic as that green is.  I think it will play very close to an average of par.  Not sure I would bet on the entire field posting a sub-par average.

Plenty of both afflictions here.

By the way, No. 5 is 3-under so far.

I wouldn't bet on the field bettering par, but I do like the suggestion that someone makes 2.

Which would look better in this color, Caroline's hair or Mucc'is posts?  And yes, it would be great to see an eagle at 5...

I like this blue.
