Here are my thoughts and photos. I drove four hours to play this course.

Hi Mark,

I played RCC several times in college (went to Middlebury only 30 miles up Rte. 7 from Rutland), and it's really a treat.

Vermont doesn't have many old historical layouts with pedigree, and it's my opinion that Rutland is the best public course in the state.  It's only 6200y, but plays longer, and the way the course interacts with the creek is interesting.  It ticks off all the New England golf boxes...quick bent greens, undulating ground, quirk, rock outcroppings, half-par holes, and mountain views.

There are a couple great days to be had in the area...one can ski at Killington (about 15 miles away) and play RCC in the same day in late May/early June, or sticking to golf, RCC can be paired nearby with Green Mountain National or Neshobe Golf Club, both good forested mountain layouts that exemplify the solid stable of Vermont courses built from 1995-2010.  GMN is attributed to Gene Bates, and Neshobe was an old home-made 9 holer that was converted to 18 by Steve Durkee.  Neshobe is more forgiving, and contains a fun bite-sized tour of the Vermont landscape in 18 holes.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Yes, I would reccomend Rutland. One of my home courses is Keene CC (1899) which was redone by Wayne Stiles and Hooper Golf Club in Walpole NH, also a Stiles and one of the best 9-holers in America.

Of course, the best time of year to play these tracks are between 9-20 and 10-10 in the fall.

It should be noted that Rutland is also the summer course for Barry Van Gerbig, longtime member of Seminole (his brother Mickey was an excellant amateur for many years) and also its former President.

Feel free to contact me anytime for courses in Northern New England.
