UK trip in June
« on: April 15, 2014, 02:49:34 PM »
Hi Everyone,

In June I have the pleasure to travel to the UK again with some time to play golf!
After last year's experience and the recent Wales trip still in mind I'm really looking forward to it.

My itinerary so far includes Royal St. Georges, Sunningdale, Walton Heath, Woodhall Spa
and about 5 days in St. Andrews, hoping to at least play the Old and the New.

Before driving up to Woodhall Spa I have one day or maybe two left in the London area.
Which courses should I try to play? This will probably be the 16th and maybe the 17th of June

After St. Andrews on my way back down towards Newcastle to take the boat back to Holland.
I'm also looking for courses to play. North Berwick I have high on my list, but I'm interested
to hear your opinions. For this part I plan to have about 5 days.

Hope you can help me out and if you live in the area, I'd like to have someone to play a round with.

Cheers,
    Jan

Jan,

Look at - www.golfempire.co.uk - it lists almost all the Open Competitions at almost all the golf clubs in the UK, including both highly regarded clubs and quietly hidden gems. You might be able to pick up a bit of a bargain as Open Comps are always cheaper than full green-fees. You also get to play off the back/competition tees with a normally better than usually prepped course and you might even win a prize! I suggest you also establish from somewhere like Googlemap how long it will take you to drive between the various locations. Premier Inn and Travelodge will usually give good accommodation deals if booked up in advance.

I would see if you could fit in a morning at Royal Worlington & Newmarket on your way up to Woodhall Spa.

Gullane 1, 2 and 3 are pretty good. Especially No. 1. Luffness is good fun too. Both are right by Muirfield and therefore on the way to Newcastle. Seaton Carew if you can get down to it is very good. Near Newcastle there is Brancepeth Castle too, which I played quite a lot at university. That was good fun and has a tremendous set of par threes. Ganton might be a bit too far south, but is certainly worthwhile visiting.

On the way down from Scotland to Newcastle I like Goswick a lot.  If you do go there let me know and I might be able to join you.  If you wanted a game in Newcastle itself you'd be welcome at The Northumberland.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

If you're in Sandwich it would be a great idea to get over to Deal for a round at Royal Cinque Ports.

Very near Sunningdale are two absolutely fabulous courses ...... Swinley Forest and St. George's Hill.

thanks very much for the advice so far.
I'll have a detailed look over the upcoming Easter weekend.
It looks like Swinley is a clear favourite!

I won't have time to play Deal on my way up, I did play it a number of years
ago and really enjoyed it.
Royal Worlington I might be able to squeeze in on my way up, even
though I played it earlier, it was a treat to enjoy again.

Cheers,

If you can't get on Swinley Forest, consider Woking which is relatively close.  It's the progenitor of the heathland courses around London. It's also possible to play both in the same day, which I did in early September of last year.

I should add that I have GCA and the Woking write-up to thank for finding Woking at all.
