1 round in la quinta

quick questions folks.. will be staying at Laquinta for 2 nights in a couple weeks and will have one for one round in Palm Springs.

PGA West will be closed that day... which course should I play?   Heard good things (relatively) about the mountain course.   Or should I look to play somewhere else in Palm Spring? 

(Not looking for an invite here at all.   Will be playing with a friend from work who i wouldnt want to bring to any private course)

I like LaQ Mountain the best out of all the public access in that area (and better than a lot of the privates). If you are staying at the resort it is super convenient. I also like Silver Rock and Desert Willow Firecliff. Stone Eagle if you have connections...but maybe not the best spot for your friend.

The Mountain course is definitely worth playing and the location is perfect, so I'd just play there.  There are plenty of private options, including the nearby Citrus Club, which is a fun, and demanding, Pete Dye layout, but you'll be content at the Mountain, I would guess.

I would agree with the Mountain course, but I would call ahead and see what kind of shape it is in.  I was in Palm Springs last month and heard the Mountain course was closed for a while because of flooding and recently reopened.  A couple of guys I played with played it and complained about the condition of the course.

I believe they had a pretty good storm about three weeks ago. Good idea to check any spot you're considering to make sure they didn't get hit too hard.

Another vote for SilverRock as far as La Quinta courses.

For something a little bit more wide open (if that's valuable to you or your guest) Escena is a pretty good option. It's not really a desert course in the target sense and will allow for a little bit more wiggle room of the tee. Would be about 15 to 20 minutes from La Quinta though.

I don't know if you live in the Coachella Valley, but when it only takes you 15 to 20 minutes to get from La Quinta Inn all the way to Escena you let me know.  Whether you take the 111 or I10 to get to Escena it is going to take you well over 30 minutes to get from one to the other.  The Valley is a lot more spread out than most people imagine.  Also being there in prime season, traffic is often congested, you hit a lot more lights. 

For my suggestions since I know every course there pretty well.  If you are staying at La Quinta Inn, just go ahead and play La Quinta Mountain, it is a very fun course, and has some great holes along the mountain. 

Other suggestions would be Marriot Shadowridge, very underrrated.  I just played Indian Wells Golf Resort Players Course a couple of weeks ago, and I was blown away by how good of shape the course was in, and that is coming from a guy that works in turf.  To be honest, it was in better shape than most private clubs, and it is a very good golf course.

Just came back from Shadow Ridge - really good shape playing firm and fast.  Desert Dunes is pretty good - especially the cart girls.

I usually stay at Desert Willow or the Marriott across the way. Since they are pretty centrally located, just about everything is 20 minutes from there. Makes it easy to forget how long you can spend in the car if you're not careful with your valley destinations.

Based on your recommendation, I presume LQ mountain is back to normal. Was the early March rain an issue out there of any consequence (for LQ or anywhere else) or is most everything in fairly good shape right now? Being addicted to desert heat and comically inexpensive green fees, my Desert season hasn't quite started yet. But it is getting closer...

+1 on Laq Mount if it is in shape. If not the PGA West Norman course is close by and fun and easy access.

Silver Rock is interesting/fun - the 14th (15th?) hole with the aqueduct running down the middle of the fairway aside.

Desert Willow is great too. Mountain View is considered the easier of the 2 courses, but Firecliff is still playable for a below average player.

Jim,

Well obviously he should consider Stone Eagle, but if he is saying he doesn't want to bring his friend out to a private club, that usually means he doesn't want to go to a private club.  Stone Eagle is pretty exclusive, they don't want people with their shirts untucked, and cussing up a storm. 

Stone Eagle is the best desert golf course, end of discussion.  There is nothing like it.

I am in the Coachella Valley all winter. Logistically the Lq Mountain is best for this trip. Another time would call for a visit to the best - Stone Eagle.

Played the mountain today. The Bermuda is coming out of dormancy and the greens are in very good condition. Better golf holes than all of the publics mentioned.
