Interesting, according to their website Donald Ross, William Flynn, AW Tillinghast, William Watson, Bill Coore, and Gil Hanse have all done work there (among others). That is quite the group...

Denver CC is one of the big 4 in Denver (Colorado GC, Cherry Hills, Castle Pines GC and DCC). I have yet to play it, but I don't think that it is on the cheap side at all. However, if Tommy's son lives in Capitol Hill, then DCC is the closest of the well regarded clubs in the area. Also worth noting, CommonGround is probably 15-20 mins from Capitol Hill. Not a private, but a great club none the less and Gib is right, Riverdale Dunes is an excellent public course and you can see a lot of Doak in it. The other very good public in the area is Murphy Creek.

Not quite certain how Martin Niemoller got into the conversation. I did meet him when I was a kid in Germany.  He was still repentant for not speaking earlier in Hilter's regime.
Getting back to my son, however, DCC and other clubs like that are way out of Erik's league.  He is a good player, high single digits, but just needs a place to call home.  When you grow up in a country/golf club environment and have belonged to a nice little club in MPS it is hard to go the route of public golf.  He likes to just show up and play.  Are there clubs in the $10,000 initiation fee are?
Thanks for all the responses

Tommy,

I fully understand the desire to be a member at a club and play less crowded golf courses.  However, if you're going on the quality of the golf courses alone, the top Denver-area publics (e.g., CommonGround and Riverdale Dunes) are easily superior to the 2nd and 3rd tier clubs, in my opinion.  One option for your son would be to stay public in Denver and perhaps join Ballyneal.  I'm not sure of their initiation fees, but your son might consider Lakewood, Columbine and Pinehurst, if private golf closer to home is required.

He might investigate Lakewood Country Club, my home club. The full initiation fee is beyond the $10,000 range, but they offer an introductory one year membership for which the down payment is well below $10,000. There are a number of installment plans available. Their waiting list is short at this time. If traffic is light it should take around 15 minutes to get to the club from Capitol Hill.
Lakewood has a 100+ year-old course, originally laid out by Tom Bendelow, then redesigned in 1916 by Donald Ross, although he was never on site. Later work on some of the greens was done by Press Maxwell. In 2007, the club adopted a new course master plan, which was created by Gil Hanse, who is the club's consulting architect. Progress on this plan is in its beginning phases. The course is very easy to walk. There is an active seasonal caddie program.
Aside from the course itself the club has an active junior program and many family activities.
Tommy, please PM me if I might provide further information.
