Pinehurst resort to add new course

Thought people may be interested in this news.  The high end resorts/destinations seem to be growing while the daily courses are failing.

This is interesting news... I was actually hoping you we're referring to Bill Coore's updated (new) course over at the Pit.  Does the reference to 36 holes mean we will see a new 18 at National?  Thanks for the update!

$1 million for clubhouse renovations? Seems reasonable.  ::)

My interpretation of the "36 hole private club within a club" is they are combining the National and Pinehurst #7.  There are various membership structures for locals at Pinehurst.  #7 membership is an upgrade.  The base membership does not provide access to #7 or the clubhouse at #7.  Also the housing community around #7 is gated.

It is when compared to the $4 million renovation of the main members clubhouse.

How soon before the courses are given a bit of polish from a minimalist architect?

Plus the new course would give the Resort 11 courses.

I really don't get the appeal for the resort.  The course isn't of sufficient quality to add much (if anything) to their portfolio in my opinion.  And, unlike the Pit, I don't see that blowing it up and starting fresh is much of an option since the routing is largely fixed due to home construction.  Is the goal just to add Nicklaus to the nameplate?

I think in general Pinehurst area is on the upswing, driven by the Opens and renovations at #2 and M-P, but clubs within clubs don't seem to work too often.  And if a great course like Dormie can't generate tee time why do they need more courses - is the renewed Pit going to be something unique?

With the acquisition, it's possible that the #10 on the site of The Pit may be put on hold (no inside dope, just surmising.)

The Pinehurst "club" plays things close to the vest, so perhaps they are on a drive to attract more retirees to the area. Perhaps there will be tax breaks associated with the acquisition. Perhaps the membership of "the club" has indicated that it would prefer a bit more private space or some will be headed to Forest Creek.

Ron what are the 11 courses?  1-8 + National + ?Pit? + "Thistle Dhu?

I don't really think the golf course was the driving factor in this.  I figure they are looking utilize economies of scale and increase the number of potential diners.

Matt here is a link to an old thread from Chris Buie with the C&C proposed routing.

That being said I've read Nicklaus did a routing in the same general area in 2005 and Rees Jones did one before around 2000, so we'll see.

I heard The Pit is being used for parking at that summer's Opens.  True?

Pinehurst already bought The Pit a few years ago:
