Torrey Pines to host 2021 U.S. Open
« on: March 11, 2014, 12:33:15 PM »
Just needs the final city approvals, reports the Union-Tribune...

USGA President Tom O’Toole Jr. said his organization is hopeful the City Council will approve the deal, adding that San Diego never left the USGA’s radar after then-Mayor Jerry Sanders extended an invitation to hold another U.S. Open here on the day the ’08 event ended.

“There are a lot of chess pieces. It’s a process that takes some time,” O’Toole said. “We wouldn’t have gone back to Torrey Pines any sooner than 10 years, and we’re slightly outside that range now. We had a fabulous Open there; the city was great; and the community was incredibly supportive.”

Will that be Tiger's last shot at a major?
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

As a San Diego native, I think it's great the USGA is going back to Torrey.  Big win for the city.

An interesting point from Shackelford regarding the timing of the announcement:

"Although Leonard's story quotes USGA President Tom O'Toole saying it would have been ten years at the minimum before a return, as another Leonard column points out, the real impetus for the USGA to go back came after new PGA of America CEO Pete Bevacqua indicated interest in taking a PGA Championship there.

It sounded as if Bevacqua was ready to bring a PGA to Torrey at first opportunity. So is it a coincidence that USGA Executive Director Mike Davis decided only two months later to take another strong look at Torrey?

    Maybe. Maybe not."

I contracted mono in the days leading up to the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.  Not leaving my couch for 5 straight days, I watched literally every televised golf shot of that tournament. It was awesome and almost makes me hope for a repeat experience in 2021.

I picked the wrong time to get Mono. Doral this past weekend did not provide that same feeling  :-\

being an east-coaster i love west coast opens as the usga values prime time coverage.

allows me to play my usual 18, hit the bar.  run out for an emergency 9.  then head home and watch the last groups tee off #1.

Ok, so which course did not get the US Open for 2021?

This eliminates several courses such as the new one in Texas that is being designed by Coore and Crenshaw. And I guess Trump will not be hosting a men's US Open at Ferry Point either.

I guess Southern Hills and Congressional are out of the running too. I wonder what is wrong with Southern Hills.

I thought they would go back to Pinehurst or Merion.

Who is the favorite for 2022 on the east coast? I would say Pinehurst.

Would they go back to Chambers Bay or Olympic in 2023?

Looking forward to see what changes the USGA will make to Torrey with Rees or another architect.

Joel, honest question here...

Do you think the USGA will suggest major course alterations for the '21 US Open?  The course can already stretch to 7800+ yards and they can pinch the fairways as much as they want.  It's not really a Merion-type situation that they have to deal with.

I get the sense that very little will have to be done to the course to hold the tournament there (even though it is 7 years away.)

Rees is no longer the go-to guy, but I am inclined to agree with Joel. I could see a Doral-like transformation, but with a different aesthetic obviously.

7 years is a long way away.  With the ball and equipment, who knows.

The course was redesigned in 2001 so the 2021 Open will be a full 20 years after the rebuild.  All of the bunkers will probably need to be rebuilt and it may require a new irrigation and drainage system?

I also think this years US Open will be a test to see if no rough works in a major.  There are spots at Torrey that if the rough was cut and its fast and firm, a miss hit ball could down into the ravines.

Imagine #4 with no rough down the left side.  That's an intriguing possibility.

Playing devil's advocate for a second, when would this reno/upgrade take place?  Mickelson's North Course renovation is going to start after next year's Farmers Insurance Open.  There is plenty of time, but they would have to allow for that.

I'm not saying Torrey couldn't use some serious architectural tinkering, but I think part of the reason the USGA is going back to Torrey is because how successful the '08 setup was.  On the other hand, Pinehurst No. 2 went through some significant changes since '99 and '05.

Great, now I'm debating myself...

You'd have to re-imagine the entire 4th hole before eliminating rough down the left side meant anything at all. As it is now, there's no reason to be anywhere near the left side of that hole.

Why would such a course that is yet to exist even be under consideration?  Unless the USGA wants an excuse to bring an Open to Dallas.  I suppose that's possible, but the tendency to hype the over-rated is common in Texas, and there has been a lot of hype about this course.  Sure, C&C lend tremndous credibility, but that does not ensure US Open worthiness.

That course will be busy hosting the Nelson a month before.
