The George Gobel of Florida Golf Courses ?
« on: March 13, 2014, 06:56:36 PM »
Could just be the loneliest GC in the state. Twice I've told myself to stop at this course for a quick nine on my way home, and twice I found myself up in S. Carolina before remembering to do it.  ::)
Anyone know the spot? And if you do, is it worth a look-see?

George Gobel? You are showing your (advanced) age. ;) I am also old enough to (barely) remember him, but my guess is the vast majority of our fellow GCA-ers are not!

Jim,

Is this the "brown shoes with a tuxedo" type of golf course?  ;D

Now you're assuming any around here does their own laundry.  Have you seen the courses these people play?

Jim - as David suggests, you might as well have asked if it was the 'Foster Brooks' of Florida golf. Or how about the 'Red Buttons', or maybe even the 'Franklin Pangborn' of florida golf. Geez, I used to think you were a 'with it' guy, despite your age!  :D  Admit it, you used to watch all the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts. (By the way, I think I'd like to know where the Foster Brooks is...)

Dean Martin was the coolest of the cool.  In 1962 my UCSB golf team went down to Bel Air for a match vs. UCLA.   Dino was hitting long irons across the barranca from near the tenth tee to his caddy across the ravine.  "How ya doin' fellas?" he asks.  We mumble.

Bill - ha, perfectly told! I can picture Dean smiling a hello, and you youngsters mumbling back.

Jim - yup, for a while it did seem like Dean had it ALL figured out, didn't it?

Ah, Jim, thanks - great picture, and it warms my heart. Growing up, at weddings and funerals, I'd see at least dozen men (uncles, distant relatives) who looked exactly like those two, and they too were always smiling and friendly, and for the same reason, i.e. they'd been drinking since breakfast (usually a shot of Canadian Club in their morning coffee)! And is that an unfiltered smoke in Dino's gloved hand? OF COURSE it is!

You might as well copy an escarpment style waterfall if you're going to have one on a golf course/wild animal preserve that features game from the African continent.  ;D
