I was asked for an opinion on building a small artificial green- 22' x 7'- for use primarily by one person to hone a sound, repetitive putting stroke.  He thinks it should be completely flat, but doesn't know what the better configuration might be: 1) one holes at each end; 2) three holes with one in the middle; 3) one hole near opposite corners at each end; 4) other variations.  My advice was to put some minor slope, at least on one side with holes at opposite ends, but he doesn't think the area is large enough to accommodate it.

He didn't ask about the type of surface (I think he has talked to a contractor in the business), but he would welcome input from experienced sources (and clearly I am not one of them).  Thoughts?

Outside or inside Lou?

I have a friend with one and it is great for practicing little wedge shots as well.  You need a mat to do so because lawn grass is not a great substitute for the type of stuff you see on the course.

Outside.  Thanks.

Boy, could I use one of those (a chipping area).  Maybe I need to start a new thread about advice on new wedges!

Seems a waste to not go with holes at both ends. Perhaps one full size and one smaller?

Personally, I think any slope that could be accommodated in that space would fairly quickly become useless. He would just groove it anyway since, from how it sounds, the options for attacking it would be limited. That said, I'm a guy who finds straight putts far more difficult than sloping ones.

Thanks Mike.  I'll make an email introduction so the two of you can chat at your mutual convenience.

You're welcome.
It sounds more like a bocce ball court
Which is what I would do if I were him
Build a level surface so he could practice or play bocce ball
I wouldn't put holes in the green I'd just use posts to putt to
I can suggest materials
Cheers

Id' be interested in your suggestions for multi use bocce/putting green.  Thats a fanastic combo.  good bocce courts are some type of heavy powdered stone or clay correct?  What are your suggestions?

I am assuming it would be recreational bocce - bifurcation if you will.
You can either play bocce on artificial turf or putt on the stone/sand mix.
