Unusual old "golf" game
« on: March 24, 2014, 10:58:15 PM »
This is a real shot in the dark, but I'm going to put it out there anyway.

Maybe about 15 years ago I saw a show on ESPN about a golf-like game played in Yorkshire. It was on its last legs at the time and may be completely extinct by now. The crux of the story was that it was a working mans game to rival golf and the men who played it were very proud that the local golf pros found it to be a much harder game to play than golf.

Basically, it was played with a stick where the end had been squeezed and shaped in some sort of vice to great a dense head. The ball was actually and oval shaped hard object, possibly a stone. They had to flip this object in the air with the stick and then hit it to some distant hole or target.

Does anyone recall seeing this show or know anything about it?

Many thanks in advance.

Mark,

Check this out, starting at about 13'10".
It's not exactly what you are looking for, but the game is real and might lead you to what you are looking for.
And the clip is worth watching, regardless.

But I suspect this is what you are looking for:

Nipsy is the one. Many thanks Neil. You've stopped me from driving myself crazy!
