Aerial of the Day #381 - 11 Aug 2003
« on: August 11, 2003, 09:13:09 AM »
Finally got the web site problems fixed.   :-\

Will be unavailable until at least 11:30, so you'll have to fend
for yourselves a little while....

Starting across the pond this week...same drill:  England or Wales only....

Even UK courses are not immune to fairway narrowing.  Look
at those bunkers no longer in fairway lines....

Queen Z-J plays here?

Sperm and narwhal located here?

I wish I could think of some good clues.  But I would like to hear what people here think of the course and if this course would make for a good Open venue.

Give Prince Porth a ring?   :P

Six-time host of British Amateur has also hosted the Walker
Cup and the Curtis Cup.  Also has hosted European
professional events.

When riding Whales across the Atlantic, I would chose this as my Port of Call.

This is Royal Porthcawl, in Porthcawl, Wales, designed by
Charles Gibson.  RP hosted the 1964 Curtis Cup and the
1995 Walker Cup (including Tiger).

The layout is here:

from the web site and pics of each hole (go to "The Course"):

http://www.royalporthcawl.com/index.php

including the idyllic setting of the 1st (any better than this?):

other clues include:

"Queen Z-J" and "Mrs. Gordon Gecko" refer to Welshwoman
Catherine Zeta-Jones ("Queen" = "Royal"), wife of Michael
Douglas, who played GG in "Wall Street".

"King Woosie" = "Royal" Welshman, "Ian Woosnam".

"Sperm and narwhal located here?" = both are types of "whales"

"Region of Darwin's fave" = Wales seaside course, Aberdovey.

"Give Prince Porth a ring?" = "Royal Porth Call"

"sounds like a stopover on a vacation cruise" = "port of call"

EDIT:  missed Tommy's during write-up:

"whales", "port of call"
