Ken Fry paid my 32 dollar green fee at the Warren Course this summer (greens just got punched).

I think regular walking rate in the summer is 35 or 37.  Fantastic rate, lovely course.  Like all c n c the game is in the greens.

Kington is without a doubt my top deal.  I think its about £15 on county card.  Hands down the best cheap course I have ever played.

Reddish Vale worked out to £18 without flashing anything.  Cheap as chips for a fun course.

Cavendish works out to about £15 on the county card - try to play another Dr Mac course of this quality for that kind of money.

Cleeve Cloud is about a tenner on the county card.  Its almost worth that just to walk the property.

Church Stretton is about a tenner on the county card.  See above.

Shennecossett-Donald Ross with a little Brian Silva sprinkled in. Between $20 and $40 to walk depending on the season. Groton, Connecticut .

I just paid $20 or so to play the Charleston Muni over Thanksgiving week. It's no CC of C or Yeamans but it has some cool old greensites and is a (literally) untouched Raynor on the water. The 12th hole there is just flat out really cool. I shutter to think how neat the place could be with a low-key renovation of the greens and bunkers. The staff there is also very welcoming and the 19th hole there is fun and full of locals.

Fun course. But I think it's actually Johnny Adams that designed it. I would definitely return.

Bethpage Green was mentioned. I would also nominate the Blue course (same price of course.) I also love Saratoga Spa SP- $28 weekdays, Griffith Harris (Greenwich CT)- $28 weekdays (they never check residency), Twin Hills (Rochester NY)- $25 weekdays, and Cobbs Creek- not sure of current rates but I think I paid about $18 back in the late 90's.

I always try and play Avon Field GC located in Cincinnati at lest 1-2 times per season. A par 66, without any par 5 holes is a quirky, fun course with small greens and it's a fun walk. $16 to walk 18 holes (which might be cheaper than the first time I played it back in in 1993), and the course is always in pretty good shape. I just wish I could figure out who designed it. My best guess is Bendelow or possibly Langford and Moreau...

When I was living up north I played every single course in Moray, bar one, and quite a few "over the border" in Highlands and Aberdeenshire and rarely paid more than £12. That includes Duff House Royal, a very fine Dr MacKenzie course. Nairn Dunbar was horribly expensive at £20 from what I remember but certainly worth the money.

I remember a day trip through to Fraserburgh and playing Fraserburgh for £12 and straight after having a game on Inverallochy for £10. The cheapest round however was Kingussie where they refused to charge me any more than £7.50 because the it was still early in the season and the course wasn't in the best of nick. Frankly, I've played courses in a lot worse condition and the scenery was stunning.

One more that I played in the last couple of years was Forfar. Don't know if I've mentioned it but it's an absolute gem. Greenfee - £12.

Richard, Avon Fields is about 3 miles from my house. I've been to the range there but never played it, as I don't play a ton of golf in Cincinnati outside of my club.

Let me know if you head out there next year and want company. I'd like to play it.

That's the Teamster's summer retreat and far from anywhere. Michigan is bigger than I thought. About 15 years ago it was a day trip from Traverse City. It was set up for cart riding and I preferred to walk. They accommodated me, but on about the 5th hole, after hitting my first bunker shot, there was no rake. I eventually found out the rakes were on the carts.

New Forest Golf Club can be played in the summer for as little as £5 on occasion. Three and a half hours of golf amongst the ponies on a very natural track for a fiver. There's nothing to dislike about that.

PS: Is this post really intended for the likes of Notts, Rustic Canyon et al to get a mention?

 8) Used to be a course in Morning Sun, OH where in winter you'd put a dollar or what ever you felt like into a tin can at the first tee to play over the frozen tundra..  that'd be good this winter.

.. hmmm , on second thought, I'm staying on 30th parallel again this winter…  let the good memory last..

p.s. is Sleepy Hollow, first Thompson course I played.. good pick for NE OH

Kinda applies. I play the french lick hill course for 30$ including cart fee. Great course usually $100 plus a round. I have a family member who works for the casino in town and gets me on with employee discount.

I don't really like Hawaii golf much but there are a few bargain basement courses that make for a nice walk.  Nine Hole Cavendish Golf Course in Lanai City, HI, built by a Dole supervisor in the 1940's.  Now owned by the city with greens (sometimes) maintained by the adjacent Experience at Koele and virtually no maintenance anywhere else.  No pro shop.  If you ask the locals the course is free, but there is a drop box and I have heard $10 recommended.  Some the holes are actually pretty good and it is a pleasant peaceful place for a quick nine.  This may not be saying much, but I'd rather play there than the adjacent nine at the Experience at Koele even if the resort course was similarly priced.  Conditions are bad but the experience worth repeating.

Similarly, there is another 9 hole former plantation course on Kauai called Kukuiolono (1920's or earlier) where the green fee is something like $18.   Gets more play than Cavendish, and some of the holes are pretty bad, but some are decent and the wind blows and there is plenty of width and the distance views are great.

If you flew to Hawaii to play one of these gems and stayed at a high end resort you could probably make both lists.

Imagine paying $30 for Arrowtown when you could play up the street at The Hills for $450 (?) 15 games v 1!!

Port Fairy in Victoria is awfully good for $25.

Mike,

Full playing membership at Arrowtown is $495.   I think that is better value for the extra $45 dollars than one game at The Hills. :)

Two separate questions.

Of the two -  Hills and Arrowtown =- which is the better course?
If both were priced the same where would you play?

I have not played Hills and have only walked Arrowtown so I don't really have an opinion - I just struggle with $450 a game when Barnbougle is $100
