New Bunkers at PB's 14th..............
« on: August 20, 2003, 12:30:22 PM »
From The Monterey Herald, 8/20/03.

New bunkers have been installed to protect portions of both the right and left sides of the primary landing areas farther from the tee.

"The new bunkers simply complement the bunkers that were already there," said RJ Harper, senior vice-president of golf operations for the Pebble Beach Company. "We're just matching the original design of the way the hole was meant to be played, much like we did with the changes on No.18."

In the third round of the A.T.&T. this year there were only eleven bogies recorded on the hole.... hence the change.

By the way there was a bomb placed outside of Chas. Schwab's house adjacent to the sixth tee and fourteenth green on Monday. Players were required to play the sixth from a way forward tee and forego playing the fourteenth.

Here's the fairway bunker area and also the location of the bomb.  Which house is Schwab's?

I hope (but seriously doubt) that Pebble reduced rates for getting only 16 1/2 holes' worth.

I also see the old 5th has been develped with a new road and stuff on it.

They're getting closer, Shivas.

Does anybody know what R.J. meant by that quote? Other than some other two letter abbr.

I don't think you guys really get what is actually going on here. Do you know who the Pebble Beach Company's Golf Architect is?

It's my GUESS that this now all part of the Fazio/Marzaltov "leave our mark on every great American classic" mentality. I will lay big money on it!

From this photo, Schwabs house is left of the par 3 5th or right of the 6th tee.  It looks like its still under construction when this photo was taken.

I can't imagine only 11 bogeys on this hole during the 3rd round?  Its a very long hole and the green can be very difficult to putt.

You mean "left as viewed from the 5th tee" right? Otherwise Mr. Schwab has built himself a very expensive underwater mansion.   ;)

That over head picture was taken too soon. There are two more bunkers on the left not shown in the picture.

The new bunker on 18 is directly to the right of the tree. Guess they thought it was too simple of tee shot. For the average player desperately wanting that par on his one shot at the great 18th, this new bunker is horrible.

New bunkers left on two are a good change.

The new bunkers on the right of 14 are just past (10 yards or so) the old set and match them fairly well. Not sure as to the bunkers on the left of the fairway, not the side I missed the fairway on. :-)

The old 5th is now a huge house. I've got a pic around here somewhere. Built by a car dealer from SF or SJ I was told.

The big tree in the middle of 18 now has pitch canker and is dying. It looks pretty bad. They are looking for a replacement but, by law, Pebble can't cut the tree down until completely dead.

Tees on 16 are being reworked.

No.2 green is open and is 100% bent. It's very firm and very fast. I'm told PB is trying a new strain of bent that may be able to survive there. If so, look for all PB's greens to go to bent in the future. (Yipee)

Also, the new layout at MPCC are taking shape. You can really tell it's a Stranz on some of the holes. Very picturesque, especially the holes near 17Mile Dr. I hope this doesn't scare anyone but a couple of holes had a Tot Hill Farm look to them with the way he used the rocks, bunkers and fairway contours.

JB- I hear he's gonna go for the record and try to beat out the house behind #10 green. Which to my knowledge has been "under-construction" for at least a decade.

Tommy is no doubt on to something. They used Jack and crew for the changes surrounding the new fifth. Now, with the Forest Course, they will probably use Pelican Hilll as a model. :'(

If the new bunkers are on the left on 14 two things come to mind. A really really bad pull there could have one down on #6 but even if it stayed up it was the nastiest rough and very tough to get to a decent spot in the fairway. With bunkers there they will serve as part containment and if they are shallow will probably make the second slightly easier.

Tiger,

The other house in the Schwab/Lucas compound is owned by Lucas the venture capitalist, NOT  Don Lucas the mega auto dealer.

And Huckaby will be happy to note (and maybe Mucci also) that Mr. Don Lucas is also a strong contributor to Santa Clara Univeristy, specifically the School of Business.

I stand corrected.
