There is something about this photo?  The nature and industry aspect, the beauty and ugliness, its disturbing yet interesting.  I don't know where to focus my eyes or attention?  Technically its very well done.

Joel, it's where they ran out of real estate on a thoroughly interesting but manufactured golf course.

It reminds me more of China than Phoenix.

Why do I like the shot? For the reason  you stated...one doesn't know what to think.

It's a contrast. Sunset shots on golf courses are usually beautiful, but this one is a head scratcher.

An engineer might, might.....MIGHT call this beautiful IF he is also a golfer.

Joel / Wayne:

As a golfer, strangeness of the photo also includes not knowing the direction from where the approach shot comes from.

Mike, I agree about keeping architecture in context. As this is a par-3, the shot is from the tee. I cropped it out  because this picture  wasn't so much about the architecture as the contrast.

Great shot, other than the time stamp which, unless your camera is broken, excludes it from the contest.

Thanks Mac and Bruce,
I have said it before, but I was very lucky that my father introduced me to golf, and luckier to be able to play so much with him. I would be lying if I said I wouldn't kill for one more round, but I appreciate what I had! Look at that, a NYC fireman from Brooklyn playing Fishers Island, with his son. What can be better?

ASU Karsten, Phoenix, Arizona, par-3, 16th:   Is this agony, ecstasy, or both?

Funny, most would photograph this hole with a tight framing, cropping the backdrop - but with this image, you have managed to skillfully capture the essence of this course.

Next year we should disqualify all entries with:

  • more than one pic
  • photo taken in wrong year
  • image too wide

It would make this thread a lot easier to read. There's the B sides thread for those, who'd rather post without adhering to contest rules :)

Ulrich, understandable points.

However, I look at it as an opportunity to share  stuff without need for further elaboration.

The difficult part is in figuring out the formatting and getting it up. Having FINALLY done so,
why limit to one  photo? The first is the entry. The rest are gravy.

It's like a trip around the world.

There are some great images in this thread, but this one is fantastic, in my opinion.  Kept me from even trying to submit something.

I don't post here very often, but I thought I'd share my favourite photo of 2013. Shot with an iPhone, so the quality isn't the best.

The hole is the short 140yd 10th hole at Kingston Heath.
