I do find it interesting that schools like SC and UCLA (now officially the LA city champs two years running!) have such great programs despite having zero true facilities.  I know UCLA has a pseudo practice facility on the intramural fields.  What they do have is some of the greatest courses for practice.  Both have Bel Air, Oakmont, LA, Palos Verdes, Lakeside,  Wilshire, etc.  But compare that to Stanford that has, aside from one of the greatest college courses,  a ridiculous "performance area" for the team that has different grasses and bunkering based on the courses they will face in the Pac 12.  Hell, when I played at Santa Barbara City College we had very generous access to Valley Club, Birnam Wood, La Cumbre, and Sandpiper.  Not that it gave us an advantage, we just wanted to party and surf...go figure.

The practice facilities are certainly a huge recruiting boost.  However, because of the cost of college and the fact that there are on 4 1/2 scholarships per program, any full ride gets the top level player.  A friend who coaches an elite team has had to watch some marginally good players become great at other schools because he could only offer 1/2 scholarships which were still more expensive than the state school costs without any scholarship money.

Oregon State is still fundraising for a 2500 sq ft indoor facility on campus in the basketball facility. About 80% there.

I went with my son to a seminar where a number of college golf coaches spoke and gave a much different perspective on men's versus women's college golf.  Yes, there are a few very top echelon programs that emphasize golf but unfortunately the money is just not there for scholarships or amenities for men's golf at most schools. The Virginia Tech coach told us he had a total of 3 scholarships to divide up among his team. One coach related that they would have their events on the weekend and they would all pile into a van and drive almost all night to get to the venue and would be lucky to get in a practice round.  They did mention that there was plenty of money for women's golf and they had problems recruiting enough players.

Title 9 gives women's programs 7scholarships and men 4 1/2.  In addition, because athletic spending needs to equal out, SEC, Big 10, PAC 12, ect, schools spend a great deal of money on their womens sports programs.

More women's golf scholarships go unfilled than any other athletic scholarship.
