Jeff,
Not to beat the dead horse, but do you think Michael was really that off? From what I hear, a guest cannot be on the premises without the member, the fans at the tournament are patrons, the members are in jackets all the time etc. I have not gotten the impression that they are looking to be very accommodating (which they do not need to be) but at least we can admit it.
I will further admit that the tournament was without a doubt the best sporting event I have ever been to, and without the members, and their input, I am sure my egg salad would have been more than $2.00, so I have to thank them for that.

Keith,
First of all, Michael is entitled to his opinion.

In fact, I stated (or make that attempted to- as I see that post never made it) that he was right in that ANGC had slipped a bit out of the original spirit of Bobby Jones, who in fact was disappointed at the concessions Roberts made to keep the club alive during the depression and war years. Jones originally wanted "good golf guys" and in fact he and Roberts had a rift about Roberts loading up of the membership with CEO/Wall Street guys.

I did find it amusing that he stated a guest cannot ask to be invited. Who checks that? Talk about urban legend.
I think he has that confused with asking for membership, which may well be true.

To your points
A guest cannot be on the property without a member-a great rule that takes care of all manner or issues.
Pretty simple- arrive at a specified time, rather than aimlessly milling around-where you become the problem of someone other than your host.
Do most clubs need that?  of course not, but the curiosity factor is a bit higher there.
I will say when we do a charity donation or a comp group that it's not unusual for a group to arrive 3 hours before their tee time so I can see where that would exponentially multiply at ANGC

Fans patrons?-well they certainly are a cut above the spectators at ANY sporting event so call them what you will. ;D

Members in jackets-tough to defend-see tradition thread ;)
(I will say I was absolutely shocked and nearly burst out laughing when I played Sage Valley and our host-a childhood friend- was greeted at the door by an "old south" employee with his green jacket to put on-they couldn't even come up with another color????)

Is Augusta accommodating?-yes, incredibly, to their invited and escorted guests.

I really enjoyed the pictures - thanks for providing the link!

We need really special places in the world, and AGNC is certainly one of them.  All I can tell you is that the members I spoke with during the practice rounds I attended were very friendly, happy to talk to a nobody (me), and very proud of the club.   I was very impressed.

Keep in mind that one of the reasons you don't hear a lot about guest play is the need for the member to accompany.  I'm betting that most members spend a lot of time working and living out of town.  It's not exactly easy for a member from San Francisco, for example, to just disappear for a few days to have 3 guest join him/her.

Regardless of where you are from if you are a member of ANGC there is something wrong if you can't find your way semi-frequently to Magnolia Lane. If you become a member the rest is gravy. ::)

Tim - I'm guessing the average member is very driven by their career, maybe to the point of obsession.  It's probably one of the reasons they're so successful in life.  It's an interesting juxtaposition - you have the stuff to be a member, but to get the stuff, you need to be extraordinarily good in business - something that takes up all of your time.

Thanks Keith.  And to be clear, I have said repeatedly that there are many things about AGNC that I love.  Just don't love the Fortune 500 membership and the heir of superiority that the club portrays.

Ask the members you know personally--they'll tell you what you want to know. That way,you don't have to speculate about clubs where you're not a member.

My only point was that if someone is lucky enough to grab the brass ring and become a member at ANGC that they could probably find the time to get there which was in contrast to what Dan said. I guess the term "semi- frequent" set you off for some reason as evidenced by the snarky reply.  As far as speculating on what happens at ANGC I would imagine I'm not alone huh?

Sorry I didn't see this sooner.  The link now says the picture file is "empty".  Would he have been asked to remove his photos, by his host or ANGC?

Jeff,
I wonder why a course that is so accommodating to its invited guests would care if said guests post some photos of their day on the internet? Especially since the course is shown on TV, and now a video game?  ;D  ;D

A fairly simple search will uncover video of a GCA'er playing ANGC with a female partner playing her one and only game of golf EVER. Apparently the members present loved her and were very welcoming.

A couple of years ago a set of photos was posted by the brother/caddy of the US Mid Amateur champion following a weekend at ANGC.  Lots of peeks inside the clubhouse plus the course.  All were removed from the web within a few days.

This point may have been made already, so I apologize if I'm repeating what someone else may have said.  I can understand (sort of) why ANGC does not want photo tours of the course floating out there.  But why would the club also be willing to admit to spending $8.3M on a new parking lot?
