The five senses of golf.
« on: November 18, 2013, 05:08:55 PM »
I do believe there is an amount of truth to the notion that when you lose one sense the others get stronger. You drive well, you putt poorly. You make everything, you can't hit a green. You are a high handicap, you get architecture. Are there five senses in golf and if so, what are they?

Five senses in golf...

Where to play;
Who to play with;
How much to bet;
When to lay up;
When to press the bet.

Same as any other activity: sight, smell, sound, touch, and taste.

Sight: The visual image of your best shots will stay with you forever; then there are the shots that are so bad you have to turn away before they land because you can't stand to watch.

Smell: Flowering plants and budding trees, freshly-mown grass; ocean air if you're lucky, that blue-green crap they spray on the fairways and greens if you're not.

Sound: You don't have to be Johnny Miller to tell the difference between the sound of a well-hit shot and one that's a groove or two off. The dreadful sound of your ball not just brushing leaves but hitting a branch, hard; the wonderful sound of a shot hitting the flagstick and dropping into the cup from off the green.

Touch: Grips getting slick, new shoes causing a blister, every joint in the body aching; fist bump from a partner when you finally make a putt to win a hole.

Taste: First sip of beer after the round.

In order to play the way that I do, you need also to have a sense of adventure.

And for me, a sense of humor.

Gentlemen,
On the golf course I have a sense of place, a sense of being, a sense of purpose, a sense of wonder and ofttimes a sense of doom!

Cheers Colin

I started to list five non-senses in golf, then I realised there were far, far to many (sic)!

Being more serious for a moment -

peace/serenity/tranquillity
honesty/integrity/standards
achievement/betterment/puzzle-solving/history
fellowship/friendships/wellbeing
adventure/newness (as in ever changing conditions/different locations)
