Anybody have any clue as to what's the status of Edgmont Country Club?
Todays Inquirer on pg C 3 under the heading of BANKRUPTCIES list both:
Edgmont Golf Club and Edgmiont Country Club at 5180 W, Chester Pike
as Chpt 11, (no schedules available).

Hope this is a temporary situation and they will continue to operate.

The chapter 11 filing is accurate. The plan is for the club to continue to operate, and they are working on plans to return financially healthy for the long term.

Edit:  my response comes from someone I've known for years and trust is spot on Ray.

How is their course?  Considering their location, I would think they'd have a lot of interest in memberships.

Never played there. From the road it looked like a lot of parallel holes.

Hello Ray,

I was told  they will try to reorganize hoping to pay creditors pennies on the dollar. A friend, who belongs there, blames their "gold card customers". I am told they pay under three grand for unlimited golf and most use pull carts.  Then very few stay for food or drink.

The member was unsure if the mortgage company was among those who called their loans.

Hope you are well,
Ed

Great point.  Never understood the routing.

When I win Powerball, I'd like to buy this course ,or another course of its lowly architectural ilk, and bulldoze it for a new golf only club to be designed by a gca who knows how to route and design a course. There are plenty of these courses out there all over the country. No zoning problems, etc.

Do they still have that 90 degree dogleg left hole that goes down the hill like a ski jump?

Yes.

IIRC, that is a par 5 early in the round.  Maybe the 5th?

Note, I'll have a photo album of Edgmont soon. . .

You guys are thinking of No. 7, the dogleg-left that plunges downhill. It's one of the great sledding spots at Edgmont in the offseason. 5 is an uphill dogleg-right, not a bad hole.

My dad was a member there forever until he found an unbeatable non-resident deal at Moselem Springs. I was a junior member through high school.

The routing isn't good. There are loads of great elevation changes that definitely could've been taken advantage of by a professional architect. There are a decent number of fun holes, but maintaining satisfactory course conditions has always been an issue. The elevation changes and  it's location right next to Ridley Creek State Park provide for some pretty cool foliage in fall.

I heard a rumor a few years ago that Llanerch CC was looking to purchase Edgmont and build a new course there. Also lots of rumors in the last few years that it was going semi-private. If it was priced right and conditions were decent, it would do really well.

my grandfather was a member there as well. knew the owner (nazz mariani?) quite well, who if i'm not mistake desgined the course? and their logo, which i think is actually quite cool.  haven't played there in forever.

Was just over there this afternoon for a look.  It was 60ish and sunny here today and the course was crowded.  Nice to see!

I think Mayday should reroute the course.  ;D

Play in a corporate outing there just about every year. Agree with the comments about the routing. Seem to face some conditioning issues and (at least in this area) I almost never play slower greens (not that there's anything wrong with that) ... but will say the green speed is indeed consistent.

They have a sense of humor at Edgmont, as this is located near the 7th green:

The main problem with the current routing is that several holes adjacent to the creek are in a very low lying area.
Holes 2, 11, & 12 are rarely in good playing condition.
at times these holes are so wet that every shot plugs.

I've made two visits to Edgmont over the last few weeks to grab some photos.  At times lighting was pretty good, other times less so.  But at least I have it now!

I pay $1700 a year and our club is in the black and has a waiting list.  Maybe they should check their spending and close the clubhouse in the winter time or limit it's hours it saves thousands.  Are asst. managers driving corvettes?  Ive seen that at clubs in the red too.  60% of my club and my parents club use pull carts and that comment is offensive.  Most courses that use pull carts are doing very well in my neck of the woods.
