Beaconsfield GC (one last photo set)
« on: August 08, 2003, 07:51:17 PM »
Close to Stoke Poges is Beaconsfield.  A parkland course of some appeal.  It's a course of two halves: holes 1-5 and 14-18 on gently undulating terrain; the rest, over the railway tracks and on heavily undulating terrain.  The course is reasonably close to Colt's design, the main differences being bunkers with more splashed up sand faces and larger greens.

Strong par 4 1st.  Shame the clubhouse isn't visible, it's a beauty.

2nd: Is there any point in having Colt's furthest cross bunker in the trees beyond?

Super rolling par 5, 4th.

Huge pit on the left, but bunkers and green have shrunk.

Tee shot at rolling long par 4, 6th

Approach across valley.  Bunkers were recently changed.

Plateau par 3 7th.

Bunkers at 8th

Tee at 9th, typical Colt arrangment of diagonal bunkers.

Approach at par 5 10th.

Looking back

mini "Calamity" par 3, 11th

Pitch at 13th

This huge one shotter was a fave of Bernard Darwin.  But the bunker arrangement has be changed.  The green is original.

Approach at par 5 17th.

Pit at 17th.

Another set of very enjoyable pics.

If I remember correct this is the course that Luke Donald grew up on .

Brian, thats absolutely correct. They are very proud of him there and rightfully so.  His pictures hang all over the clubhouse.

Paul, wonderful pictures again.

Its such as shame that we can't leave the bunkers as they were intended.  You can almost see how they were back then.

Thanks for confirming that .

I remember playing overseas with some members of Beaconsfield about 8-9 years ago , and even that far back , they were talking about what a prospect he was . A lot of them put their hands in their pockets and sponsered him .

I am sure they must be very proud now , and hopefully for the years ahead.

Didn't know about Luke Donald; that's cool (I only walked the course this time and didn't go in the clubhouse-I played it about 10 years ago).  He looks to be the best of the new Brits.

Of the courses I visited, Beaconsfield and Stoke Poges were the only courses that had fairway irrigation.  But you can see that the club doesn't over use it: still nice and fast.
