Further additions to Britain from above
« on: November 04, 2013, 10:28:00 AM »
There are a few more aerials of golf courses added to this worthy resource:

Go to the Britain from above website and search for Golf. It brings up ca 600 images most of which we have seen before but I noticed Royal St George's, Addington, Lindrick, Wrekin, Lilleshall Hall, Braid Hills and Wirral Ladies' that I think are new (probably others, too) plus a few non-golfing photos!

Enjoy!

Thanks Mark,

Those Addington photos from 1946 & 1947 seem to show a good progression of the New Course being built over.

Those photos of Lindrick are great. Pure open heath.

Leasowe, between Royal Liverpool and Wallasey. Some of those attending BUDA stayed in a hotel adjacent.

I noted the picture of Maxstoke Castle. Does that date from the Middle Ages or is it a modern copy? Either way, Wow.

I believe that the Luftwaffe were, not surprisingly, taking very significant amounts of aerial photographs of the UK prior to 1939. I imagine they must be available somewhere and should show period golf courses in relative detail, what with beaches being potential seaborne landing sites and tree-sparse golf courses potentially useful for landing 'planes and gliders and parachutists. I imagine there must be a considerable volume of similar photographs taken by the RAF etc of western Europe as well.
All the best.

Great photos of Lindrick. It looks as if there used to be a couple of bunkers short and left of the 2nd green back then too.

Indeed! And good to see the old 12th as well, before the new hole was built on the other side of the road.

Now if only they had a plane flying around about 20 miles south of there, I will be very happy!

Cheers,

James

And a good one of Little Aston pre-war: http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/epw061259?filter=new&ref=7159

Mark

Quite an interesting aerial.  Doesn't the 5th look radically different? I was hopingt to see the 12th, but it and 9-11 are not pictured.  Also, a lot less trees!

Quite an interesting aerial.  Doesn't the 5th look radically different? Also the 12th minus the water and the green pushed further right - looks good. Also, a lot less trees!

Ciao

Sean,

I think you've made the same mistake I did when I first saw the photo. The hole nearest the camera is actually the 14th not the 12th, which is out of shot to the right.

...Your edit beat me to it!

Mauldeth hospital is surrounded by part of Heaton Moor Golf Club. It is now 18 holes. The hospital is now part of the Chinese Embassy! The one-time pro at Heaton Moor ('Charlie' Chevalier) held a record for the number of holes-in-one he achieved (31 between 1918 and 1970). There have been eight or nine changes to the layout since the club was founded in 1892, with all those changes taking place in the first 30 years.

Warren Golf Course, Branton: http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/epw054479?filter=new&ref=16441

There are three Warrens listed in R & A Handbook, but none is near Doncaster, so I presume this one is NLE.

Yes, I did a combo of the 12th and 14th as one hole.  I thought it looked pretty cool until I couldn't find the 14th!

There are quite a few bunkers missing on 1 and 7 plus a different number on 3. Those missing short bunkers on 7 I bet hid the landing zone somewhat.
