I am going to be going to Pinehurst for a long weekend (5 days) for my first visit.  I have only a limited amount of exposure to the work of Donald Ross.  Should my time be spent enjoying his works or are there others in the area that I should seek out as well ie; Dormie Club, Tobacco Road?  I will be traveling with my wife, who will play a round with me at most.  What may be the best choice for her to play? Any suggestions for where to play, eat, see would be helpful!

My top courses to play are #2, Pine Needles, Mid Pines and Dormie. I would skip TR as the greens are terrible right now. Also, I am generaly not as impressed with this course as I was 10 years ago. If you can get access Forest Creek and CCNC are worth playing (although I have not played either).

I would have your wife play either Pine Needles or Mid Pines. Pine Needles has hosted three U.S. Women's Opens. Both are owned by Peggy Kirk Bell - one of the founder's of the LPGA tour. Pine Needles is home to a fantastic women's golf school. Both courses have gone out of their way to cater to women.

My favorite restaurant in Pinehurst is Elliot's on Linden. The menu changes frequently. The chef will even make something special for you. In the village, Ten-Ya is pretty good sushi/Japanese restaurant.  If you are a BBQ fan, the guys at the Dixie Cup really enjoyed the Pik N Pig in Carthage, which is about 20-25 minutes from Pinehurst.

I think Steve hit the nail on the head.  I was going to recommend Pine Needles or Mid Pines for the spouse.  

Steve..what has happened to TR's greens?  I've always liked playing there and want to get back sometime next year.  Is it a seasonal thing or is a larger scale problem?

Thank you for your responses.  Funny enough, I was thinking about the same courses, even with regards to my wife.  If there was one other to play would it be #4 or #3?  Or maybe somewhere else?

I think the Pinehurst hierarchy goes something like 2-8-4-5-6-7-1-3, but they are all worth a shot on some level or another.  From what I've heard, 6 and 7 are probably interchangable in the above order...I have only played the first three (2/8/4).

For me, the first tier away from the resort are Mid Pines, Pine Needles, Dormie, both courses at Forest Creek, CCNC Dogwood, Southern Pines, and Tobacco Road....probably near to that order within this group too.

Next you would have Little River, National, Mid-South, Talamore, Carolina, Woodlake, Pinewild, and the like...all similar, and all contain a at least a few good holes.

The bottom tier (where absolutely some good golf can be found) is Foxfire, Hyland Hills, Longleaf, etc.

If it is just for you my next two choices at the resort would be #8 then #4.

They lost them over the summer. At the Dixie Cup I heard a rumor that there was too much salt in the soil and the course claims that problem has fixed. Cory Lewis probably knows the true story.

Pinehurst 1 is actually pretty cool.  It's short but there are some great holes and it offers new Bermuda greens.  I personally would skip 6, it's a weird one.  Mid Pines and Southern Pines would give you lots of Ross.
