And the best golf course in the US is..... New
« on: October 13, 2013, 10:19:28 PM »
Well, at least for one day, yesterday, it was NGLA.   I have been playing there for something like 25 years.  We are all familiar with the design qualities and intangibles that make the National such a special experience.  But yesterday we were literally transported to Scotland.  For the first time I have ever seen  the course had the bounce and roll of a Scottish links.  It was like a melting glacier revealing a living caveman.  I always knew it was there, but for the first time, the very first time, I saw the Scottishness of National. 6 irons that went 230 yards.  Greens that wouldn't give up a pitchmark.   Why did we get to see National like this?  Probably the result of a dry fall combined with a week where the wind has blown very consistently and at a strong clip and we see the course  was rung out of almost all moisture.

I am so pleased I got to see what I saw yesterday, one of the most special golf experiences I have ever had in the USA. I hope that someday, either luck or vision will permit me to see something like that again.

Agreed. Thanks for the story
Firm and fast a bit easier at 60 degrees
Nice to have a bit of UK  temperatures, without the rain (unless you're tring to grow unirrigated areas from seed ::) ::))

and they close in a week for the year :( :( :(

Jeff, There are other experiences(well maybe not the greens) in the US at public courses that have no irrigation(Goat Hill is about as prime as it gets right now)

Jeff Warne, one of the things I miss from golf years ago is un irrigated rough, where you could deliberately play into the rough in the expectation of 30-40 more yards off the tee.  It was particularly helpful on par 5s, since you might get home if you caught a good lie and could still make 4 or 5 if you didn't.

Bill,
That never worked for me unless my slinger landed in the right rough ;) ;D

Your experiences should and could be more common for players everywhere.
Don Mahaffey got Wolf Point like that on its second day in existence, and many more since then.
Cheers

Jeff,

That's indeed a great story, thanks for sharing. Sounds like a great day indeed and what a treat to have a little Scotland over there even if just for a day.

Mike,

I love Wolf Point as I've mentioned but I wouldn't compare it to Scotland due to the (Bermuda?) grass. I found it really tricky to play bump and run shots and noticed I really had to use a lower iron to get the ball rolling on top of the grass. I really flubbed up my first few chips there with 8 and 7 irons that just hit the ground and bit due to the spin. Normally I would use those at my home course and definitely in Scotland for example. Firm and in perfect condition it is, hats off to Dan for that.

Too bad this type of conditions are more common where appropriate in the US. Not all courses can do that.
Sharing the greatest experiences in golf.
