Cornwall Base of Operations - Advice Needed
« on: October 13, 2013, 08:23:36 PM »
My wife and I are looking at renting a cottage in Cornwall next August to get out of the Phoenix heat. She is an avid bird watcher - that will free me up to play as much as I want.

Any advice on where to rent a place?, Saunton, Royal N. Devon, St. Endoc and Trevose are a given....Any other gems to hit? I prefer links golf for this trip.

Also any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

In order of personal preference-sort've

St. Enodoc
Perranporth
Saunton (East and West)
Westward Ho
West Cornwall
Trevose
Bude and North Cornwall

a bit of a side trip but Yelverton (per Sean A.) looks intriguing

Garrett -

I spent 3-4 days in Padstow a decade ago. Played St. Endoc and Trevose, enjoyed the former much more than the later.

Be aware that drive times between the towns & villages in Cornwall are likely to be much longer than you expect them to be. It is a very pretty part of the world.

Garrett,

Padstow and St Ives both have great atmosphere, food, pubs, coastal walks and proximity to wonderful golf.

Both also get very busy in high season.

St Ives has better beaches/swimming.

Avoid driving to/from Cornwall on Saturdays. The traffic congestion on the M5 can be vile.
Try to find the opportunity to visit the Isles of Scilly, short flight or helicopter. Paradise. Bird watchers like it there, and..............there's a golf course!
Rural Retreats and English Country Cottages have a good selection of rental property - you can even stay in the lighthouse cottages at Trevose Head.
Have a great time.

Garrett,

there is lots of good golf in that area and plenty of threads on them if you search this site. Cornwall is a lovely part of the world with loads to see. There will be a lot of tourist traffic in August so be careful if you are not used to the 'left side of the road driving' practiced over here (I would go for full insurance cover.

Garrett:

I'm in Padstow with my wife the next three nights.  I'll let you know about Perranporth when I get home.  August would probably be better than late October, if also pricier -- lots of rain this week.

If you want a good choice of places, I recommend booking ASAP. Cornwall can be a zoo in August.

Garrett,

I forgot to mention in my previous post but look at the golfempire website - http://www.golfempire.co.uk/ - from January onwards. The website lists all the 'open' competitions at courses in Cornwall (and the rest of the UK as well) so you may find there are some on while you're there. By entering the golf will not only be cheaper but...... you might also win a prize!

I spent many summers at Trevose and enjoy the course greatly and it is a very friedly family based club with a great clubhouse. Perranporth is a cracking course with stunny views and quirky holes. St Enodoch has some great holes although I find the holes around the church rather boring and out of charachter. The Padstow area is blessed  with plenty of great restaurants including the Stein empire, my favourite being Paul Ainsworth at No 6.

For a happy holiday this is the site you need.

http://www.cornwall-birding.co.uk/category/birdwatching-sites-cornwall/

August is probably not the best month for migrating birds, but there will be interesting things to see.

Aim to stay within walking distances of estuaries and then you will be free to take the car.

So Padstow and Rock, both  on the Camel Estuary,  tick all boxes. There’s even a foot ferry between them.

(Or put your visit off until mid Sept and play in the BUDA Cup)

Enjoy

And if you are a Doc Martin fan, I suppose Port Issac (Port Wen) would be a must.

Along the coast of Devon and Cornwall is the Southwest Coast Path.  It runs along the entire coast and is a magnificent walk along the cliffs.

Many thanks for the advice...Keep it coming.

My wife agrees that mid Sept would be better.

What is the BUDA Cup? I'd love to find out more.

Garrett,
I may well be taken to task here  by the good members on this board for any or all of speaking out of turn, talking nonsense, and in a Mucci-esque fashion pontificating on something I have had no experience with. However not being faint-hearted here goes.

The BUDA cup itself is an old, battered but much revered pouring vessel found, I believe, in a second-hand junk-shop (sorry an antiquities store!) in BUDApest hence its name. As far as I can make out it is GCA's equivalent of the famous Claret Jug presented to The Open winner each year. The BUDA cup has been fought over  for up to a decade methinks and is presented to the winning team composed of Brits plus ring-ins versus Americans plus ring-ins so I think anyone can throw their hat in the ring!  I also suspect that the competition is lively and fierce with no quarter spared. The handicaps of individuals is also another battle-ground associated with The Cup! It seems to be a movable feast in that the playing dates can differ from year to year as do the course venues which are often lesser lights as far as popular recognition is concerned but have charm, quirk and impeccable credentials nonetheless.

I have gleaned this (possibly incorrect info!) from being vicarious and following the descriptions of the cut and thrust  as the jousting takes place. I envy the participants who play and particularly if the next meeting is down Cornwall way. Oh what a work out Bernard Darwin and John Betjeman will get! Hey they may want to fly me over to recite Betjeman's "Seaside Golf"!

I suspect my blathering will flush out past players who will provide you with the absolutely correct information but a BUDA cup appearance is high on my to-do list over the next few years.

Cheers Colin

Colin you are mostly absolutely correct in what you state.

The Buda Cup is an annual, GCA Ryder Cup style, event of legendary status.   Must be over a dozen iterations now and it has been won by GB&I, Rest of the World, USA and Europe – it just depends on who shows up.  The double secret self appointed annual committee are currently  sorting out a 3 day event for September 2014.  So far we’ve ascertained it’s likely that it will be two days at St Enedoc and one at Perranporth (or was it Trevose?) and that we are staying….somewhere in Cornwall. I have also had an indication that another member of this discussion group is considering bringing his good lady.   I think it will be very popular and will be limited to the first 24 players.

I expect more details to be forthcoming on here very shortly.  Hope to see you there.

Sounds like a good time. We are looking in the Padstow area for a cottage. Please let me know the dates, when possible. I'd love to make it work if I could join tournament. I'd be free to play as much as possible. My wife would surely rather bird watch without me.
