Rockefeller in Augusta
« on: September 29, 2013, 11:13:21 AM »
I recently read that John D. Rockefeller took up the game and became a golf enthusiastic fairly late in life. In the early years of the last century he spent several weeks every year living at the Bonaire Hotel and playing golf in Augusta. That was long before Augusta National of any of the current versions of other courses in Augusta were built. Anyone have any idea what course he played on?

The Bon-Air had its own golf course; it was supposedly rather good.

Not sure when Augusta CC opened but, if it was up and running, I have to think JDR got to play there, as well.

Definitely Augusta CC as it was founded in 1899 and Rockefeller played there frequently.
Bon Air also, and North Augusta had a hotel and course as well.

Jim:

John D. was playing golf in Ormond Beach in March, 1915 when he received word that his wife had died.

Jeff:

Any info on the original course at Augusta CC, since it presumably predated the Donald Ross version?

Jim,
David Ogilvie designed the Hill course at Augusta CC, which is the current one in use.
Ross redesigned the Hill course in 1927, Raynor redesigned the Lake course in 1926, which was the original course, eventually  lost in the depression.
Silva restored the Hill course in 2002, after multiple bastardizations.

I'll add a bit to Jeff's post.

According to the Augusta CC Club History, the first course of record in Augusta was nine holes developed by the Hotel Bon Air around 1897.  This course was located on the east side of Milledge Road.

The Augusta CC Lake Course was the first 18 hole course in Augusta and was located on the west side of Milledge Road.  It was laid out by David Ogilvie around 1902.  This course is NLE.

President Taft and President Harding as well as John D. Rockefeller all played here.  A few years later Ogilvie along with club president Dr. William Harison laid out the Hill Course, which is still in use today.

It is interesting to note that the Augusta Country Club was originally established as The Bon Air Golf Club in 1899.  In 1900 the club changed its name to the Country Club of Augusta and in 1922 to the Augusta Country Club.

Are there any pics of the Lake Course after the Raynor redesign?
