« on: September 27, 2013, 12:59:15 PM »

So what are some of the new courses opening in 2014?

1. Gamble Sands, WA, http://www.cybergolf.com/golf_news/gamble_sands_makes_debut_for_northwest_writers
2. Ferry Point, NY

Any remodels?

Medinah #1 and Hollywood [which doesn't start until next week] are our only U.S. work that will open.

We are hopeful that Tara-Iti in New Zealand will open around October of 2014, but can't say for sure until we're allowed to finish the construction.  Our project in Haikou, China, will be playable by then but probably won't open before Chinese New Year 2015 (if then).  The nine holes we've finished in Bordeaux will open summer or fall of 2014.

Keller Golf Course in St. Paul, MN is reopening next year after significant work. Rich was nice enough to give me a tour last month and the work being done looks spectacular, so I'm really looking forward to seeing the final product.

Sentry World in Wisconsin is finishing up with a big renovation. Jay Blasi the lead designer of Chambers Bay and The Patriot has done the work. I hope to get up there in a couple of weeks to see the grow in. Will be reopening next summer.

Two courses...well kind of..are planned to open in 2014 at the Diamante Resort in Cabo San Lucas.

- Tiger Wood's new course 'El Cardonal' designed by Tiger and his team at Tiger Woods Design is looking great and the construction is coming along nicely.

- The two new oceanside holes at the Dunes Course are also well under way. Davis and Mark Love have been here two times of late and together we have made a lot of progress designing the new #12 and #13 holes. I'll stick my neck out and say the new #12 will be in the course top 2 (if not higher)...and #13 should be top 10.

10 brand-new holes at the Derrick Club, in Edmonton, Alberta, will open for play next year. We'll finish the other 8 holes in 2014; the entire new course will open in spring 2015.

Battle Creek, a 9 hole course just outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee by GCA Rob Collins and his partner, Tad King.

The firm designed and completely rebuilt the former Sequatchie Valley G&CC. I went around it a few weeks ago and was blown away by the work. Pretty damn wild and a ton of fun to play. Ward Peyronnin and I are going back next week and I hope to get a photo tour posted soon after our visit.

In the meantime, Rob has taken some excellent photos of the course and posted them on the firm's website:

6 new holes at De Dommel, a former 9 holes Colt course just north of Eindhoven in the south of Netherlands, which had been expanded to 12 holes some 20 years ago by Donald Steel. Will post some pics late this week. Was a bit of a sleeper, with new holes should be included with the other lesser known Dutch Colt courses such as Hilversum and Toxandria.

6 new/restored holes at Amsterdam Old course, a 1935 Alison course near Ajax Arena, south of Amsterdam. Used to be 18 holes, now only 9 holes left (due to railway expansion). The restored holes are undergoing a special process in that we ar removing 6-7 yards deeep peat and replacing it with 7-9 yards of soil and sand, which will make it a completely different course in terms of playability, allowing for bump and run instead of only an aerial game.

Eric,

I am assuming this is the course near South Pittsburg, if so, its close location to Sewanee would make a nice day of golf between the two courses.  Also, I cannot find much info on the course and was wondering if it is private or public?

Paul mentioned the Tiger course at Diamante which is one of three newbies that will open soon in Cabo.

Just above Diamante on the cliffs and high dunes will be Quivira, a Nicklaus course that will, at the very least, grace some magazine covers after opening sometime late sporing/early summer 2014 (probably a couple/few months in advance of Tiger's course).

Also opening on December 31, 2013 will be Chileno Bay Club, a very good Fazio course worked on by Tim Jackson and Dennis Wise. It may be a little rough around the edges on opening day but should be whipped into shape shortly thereafter.

Paul - Please tell me you guys decided on 10 as a five, 12 and 13 as fours... please???

Rees,

Yes, this course is about a 3 minute drive off of I-24 in South Pittsburg. I played it and Sewanee on the same day and enjoyed them both. [I liked this one quite a bit more.] It is slated to open as a public course sometime in 2014, but as of now it still has some work to be done. Namely adding sand to a number of waste bunkers [wait til you see the redan - hello!] and installing some sort of temporary clubhouse to operate out of.

What about Keller Golf Course in Maplewood, MN?

https://parks.co.ramsey.mn.us/golf/Pages/Keller-Golf-Course.aspx

"Keller Golf Course has been the home of several PGA and LPGA golf tournaments and was a regular stop on both professional tours. Keller was the host of the St. Paul Open 1930-1968; the National PGA Championship 1932 and 1954; the Western Open 1949; the Patty Berg Golf Classic 1970-1980; and the National Amateur Publinks Championship was held at Keller in 1931."

Both par 5's in a three hole stretch into the teeth of that wind... why?

And how in the world would 5(10),5(12),4(13) work? Four par 5's on the same nine? Trying to set a record?

Greg among possibilities...

353445435... Interesting here, drop shot 3, far better greensite for a 5 using most of old 10(like it), 11 becomes 12, 13 and 14 are the new holes (and BOTH par 4s!!!), 14-17 becomes 15-18 and the 18th fairway yields a couple of homesites, iron range or perhaps Diamante's version of the punchbowl, ahhhhhhhh hadn't thought of that one had ya? I will submit an invoice!

435454354... Yuck - No bueno

534454354...:) looks like chicken dinner but put me down for option 1

Scott,

See post #3.

I was lucky enough to get a construction tour from Rich Mandell this past summer. I really liked the course as it was before, but I really think Rich and his team are doing some wonderful things in the reconstruction that will boost the inherent strategy while keeping much of the old fashioned charm of Keller.

Once it reopens next year it might become the best public golf course in the Twin Cities metro.
