Michigan Golf Question
« on: September 26, 2013, 05:52:48 PM »
Question for all you golfers from "that state up north".  I'm taking a little trip to Northern Michigan in a little over a week.  We are scheduled to play Kinglsey (not in the Machie, sorry) and Crystal Downs.  We want to try to add one more venue on the way back home to Ohio.  Arcadia Bluffs was the first choice, but that was squashed due to their busy tee sheets in early October.  Where should we play?  Ideally it would be within a couple hours of Crystal Downs on the way back down towards Ohio.

Thanks in advance Treehouse!!
2016 Highlights:  Streamsong Blue (3/17); Streamsong Red (3/17); Charles River Club (5/16); The Country Club - Brookline (5/17); Myopia Hunt Club (5/17); Fishers Island Club (5/18); Aronomink GC (10/16); Pine Valley GC (10/17); Somerset Hills CC (10/18)

I played Pilgrim's Run 2 weeks ago.  One of the best values I have ever gotten on a golf course...also designed by Devries.  They had a special that with 4 golfers, the price was under 50 dollars.  It would be an excellent choice and definitely on the way South.

Check it out...you won't be disappointed.

Bill, not within a couple hours, but directly on the way back to Cleveland, you MUST SEE the recently restored Barton Hills in Ann Arbor.

Have you seen my photo tour?

Richard,

Yes I have and I should have put that in the original post, but we would love to play Oakland Hills, but with the North course closed right now, the South is really busy so Mr. Croswell tried to help us out but he just couldn't do it.  Thanks for the suggestion though!! And I am enjoying your photo tour.

Forest Dunes. No doubt.

Not sure of your route but Lost Dunes is a wonderful place to play.  Requires a slight detour south but then you are on I 94

Forest Dunes was my first thought. If you're route home is via I-75 through Detroit try to get on Orchard Lake CC and see the restoration.

Forest Dunes is my initial thought. Besides the great quality of the course, it's also conveniently located near I-75 to get you back on your way to Ohio.

Guys,

Thanks so much for your responses.  The Treehouse never disappoints!!  It looks like we have a lot of choices and it's one of those things where I don't think we can make a wrong decision!  Now it's up to my group to find a consensus... that may be the hardest part  :-\

Bill:

Not sure how well you know the geography up here, but Pilgrim's Run is really the only one of these answers that fits the criteria you outlined, and it's quite good -- I was trying a couple of days ago to decide whether it's a 5 or a 6 on the Doak scale.  Forest Dunes is better, but that's a solid two-hour drive back to the east, maybe a little more; and all of the Ann Arbor / Detroit courses are 3-4 hours from the Downs.

Tom,

Thank you for your response and insight.  I don't know Michigan that well but I'll be traveling with a couple guys that do know it well.  So i will take your comments, as well as the others on this post and present the info to the group and we'll have to make a decision.  Either way, I think we'll have a blast!!

Bill:

I played Forest Dunes on the way back from the same trip.  It is right along I-75 and very convenient if you are taking the I-75 route.  It is due east of Kingsley, but there is no fast way to Kingsley so I went with the highway route.

You can get to Detroit easier from Cleveland to see those courses.  Harder to get back up in the sticks of Northern Michigan.  Take the opportunity to play a course up there instead of down in Detroit.

Hey Bill, totally depends on the route you take back to Ohio and where you're headed.  I reiterate the love for Forest Dunes--it's a couple hours from the Downs.  It's not getting you much closer to your destination but it is a great golf course.

You probably drive through Ann Arbor as well and, if, being from Ohio, you can stomach that giant block M, the U of M golf course is solid as well as Barton Hills.
