Ridgewood vs. Phila Cricket
« on: September 26, 2013, 11:25:45 AM »
Could be interesting to compare what was done respectively at both of these Tillinghast golf courses.

Was Ridgewood more of a restoration where as PCC more of a renovation?

Just a couple of things about  the work at Ridgewood.

First, the pictures taken by Joe were before any of the work was done. The Master Plan update was received a few months after Joe was there.

Second, it is a work in progress. The greens expansions have not yet been done on two thirds of the greens. Several key holes have not been touched yet.  The work on those holes will be done in their entirety one at a time. Those holes require bunker work, fairway work, cart path work and green expansions.

Third, assuming the work continues, it will be done gradually over a few years so as to minimize disruption of play and spread out the cost.

The Philly Cricket work, which looks fabulous, appears to being done all at once.

Cheers, Mike

I'm hoping Mike can have me up there over my school's fall break!  :-)

I've got a used hat you can have, this way you can tell people you were there and you don't have to ask for access.  How about that?   ;D

Joe,

Let me know when "your" school's break is this year. And bring Doug with you. I haven't see him this century.

Fall break was one of the added perks of going to Villanova... didn't have that at those state schools! :)

Seriously, wouldn't we consider Cricket a restoration?  Surely Powell and/or Mark will add their more-informed take, but it seems the bunkers were restored... the routing was restored... features like the bringing the quarry back into play and #15 playing more as a Redan were restorative efforts.

**DISCLAIMER** I am an engineer who never really paid attention in English class.

Maybe I tend to use the terms too loosely but I feel like I use restoration and renovation interchangeably.  DMalley, what would you consider the difference being between the two words.

Well played Doug, has the makings of a late season death match?

Mark,
I guess i would define both words slightly different.

restoration = the action of returning something to a former condition.

renovation = to make changes or repairs so that something is back in good condition.

the sentence i used in my first post was based mostly on the fact that the bunkering at Ridgewood looked alot more like the bunkers used to look at cricket.

but Mike P pointed out that the pics of the Ridgewood bunkers were taken before any work was done to them.

Here are some of my photos of the work at Ridgewood (2012) where you can see the green reclamation and reduction of the "protective rough" collars early on in the process. Obviously, the fairway and greens have grown in better over the past year.

Bill,

Thanks for the photos.

Ridgewood is highly under rated, having lived in the shadows of other AWT course in the area.

But, it's a fabulous golf course

I played Ridgewood in late August and it was firm and fast and a ton of fun to play. I highly recommend it. I was shocked at how few divots I saw in the fairways. Apparently most of the players must be pickers. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
