Only two for me but I would put Old Mac above Pac Dunes on the basis that Old Mac was for me, a unique experience.

Pac Dunes was excellent, too, but reminded me of a couple of courses in Scotland so less memorable... may be for the wrong reasons, if you understand my point.

Tom,

We'll show you ours if you show us yours :)

If I could easily rank them myself, then why would I care what anyone else thought?

I say with no guile or intended malice: it is heartening to see that one of the world's leading architecture experts, furthermore the person who understands the courses being ranked in this exercise better than anyone else, cannot readily distinguish their respective qualities.

EDIT: my point is the essential futility if not intellectual dishonesty of rankings.

I'm only at three, but of those three, I'd go Ballyneal, Streamsong, Lost Dunes.  Those last two are pretty tight, but Ballyneal was the clear #1.

I haven't yet had a chance to play any of your courses (I know, that's heresy on GCA, but what can I say).

When are you going to come down to the Buckeye State and build us a course?

Here is a quote from Tom Doak dated 2002.  He saw this coming but thought he was immune.

"Jonathan, it may be true today that many panelists pooh-pooh another Rees Jones or Tom Fazio design, but that's only because raters of years past made them famous and got them all that work.  The same may hold true in another ten years for Tom Doak and Bill Coore golf courses.  (But don't bet against us.)"

Problem is, while it's a fun exercise and it's interesting to see and discuss the individual rankings, my guess is the consensus will come out very similar to where the rags have 'em.

It's a problem as it will throw up nothing new? Or a problem because we are all brainwashed?

both.  bit of a chicken and egg thing...

Ballyneal - my clear #1 and perhaps my favorite guess ever

Pacific Dunes - these two are almost interchangeable; need more plays to determine order
Old Mac

Sheep Ranch - while a ton of fun the lost balls in the incredibly thick hay got old

Sean,

You haven't played Old MacDonald? Your assignment is to drive down there this weekend and play it.
