Since nobody has mentioned it, #6 at Hindhead.

Would everyone agree the purpose of a drop shot par 3 is to get from a high spot to a low spot, so that the golf course can continue from there?

In general, drop shot par 3s tend to be frowned upon here, with more negative than positive comments.

Reddish Vale has a classic drop-shot par 3, 240 yards from the white tee with the green 150 ft below your feet.

My Photobucket account is playing up, but click on here and scroll down to hole no 6 and you will find a nice pic of our very own Sean Arble shaping up for the shot...

I have never seen the hole, but the most severe version I've ever heard of is the 10th hole at Mountain Air in Burnsville NC, designed by my one-time roommate Scott Pool.  I think it's over 200 feet downhill ... I know that sounds crazy, but it plays literally off the top of the mountain.

Well, unless you count that 19th hole on the course in Africa where you take a helicopter up the mountain to the tee.

The 5'th (I think) at the now defunct Kooralbyn Valley (just south of Brisbane, Australia) was pretty amazing for its time. 200+ metres and whopping hang time. The whole course was the start of a new era of "modern courses" in Australia. Desmond Muirhead at his best. It was a treat to drive out there with a bunch of mates and leave a dozen B51's in the bush & the lakes.

Duncan,

Google earth has the elevation drop of RV #6 to be 238 to 177 ft. Don't know where you get the 150 ft. number.

Thomas,

I checked a couple of yours on Google Earth. While it seems you are accurate on Bristol and Clifton, the fourth at Clevedon appears to be only a 40 foot drop.

I think anyone should be wary of claims of a 100 foot or more drop.

Tom's claim of an over 200 foot drop shot par three sounds suspicious, except that it comes from Tom. And, Google Earth has it at over 200 feet down too, even without being able to fully discern where the back tee might be in the shadows.

Don't know if anybody mentioned 13 at Atlanta CC?
Was always a dicey little shot.  The wind was tough to figure among the trees

The 2nd at Waterfall at Lake Burton, Georgia. The drop is so steep that you can't see the green from the tee. I would guess at least 200 feeet of elevation change.

Par 3 13th at Saint Endreol in Southern France. When i played it the lake had dried up, not quite as daunting!

In the late 1990's there used to be a tour event in Thailand, Johnny Walker sponsored it I think it was, and one of the last holes, maybe 17th, not totally sure, was a drop shot par-3 to a semi-island green. Can't remember the name of the course. Tiger played in the event a few times.
All the best

When I think of drop-shot holes, I think of one where the ball spends a long time descending from the apex of a normal tee shot.  So unless they are very downhill, long par 3's wouldn't count under that definition . . .

In any event, one hole that hasn't been mentioned and that would could under any definition is the 5th at Bald Peak Colony -- only about 140 yards, very downhill, big bunker and ridge right in the front, plus a trench of sorts cutting through the green.

I suppose the 12th--the battleship hole--would probably also count.

Two that come to mind ...

Castle Pines ... 7 and 11 are extreme drop shots, but 4 would probably qualify as well based on many of the submissions here, it is significantly downhill

Also Ress Jones' Quintero ... 6, 9, and 16

Linville Ridge #16 plays 150-200 from the tees with at least that much drop.

Famous? Most if not all I can think of have been mentioned.

Some that I really think are fun but not necessarily famous are: 6th at Boston Golf Club, 17th at La Purisima, 3rd at Lake Merced Golf Club, 8th and 14th at Meadow Club, 16th at Montreux, 16th at La Quinta Mountain, 17th at Pechanga, 6th at Brae Burn. I think my favorites are ones where the wind is never constant, allowing for a difficult mental challenge. The 6th at BGC and 17th at La P are probably the best examples of the non-famous ones. Obviously 7 at Pebble is a great example.

PS- how steep is the drop off at the 10th hole at Congressional? I have not seen it in person, so not sure if that qualifies.
