The 7th at Old Works is pretty unique, being from the top of one of the huge ridges of mining slag there. Steepest decent that I can recall too.

15th at Radrick Farms....possibly Pete Dye's first design.....is a pretty nice example.   Not sure of the total drop in elevation, but it is substantial, and a nice hole.

How could a "Redan" (13, Yale) be a drop-shot hole when the original Redan at North Berwick was and is an uphill hole, and relies on its uphillness to be compared to the "Great Redan" of the Crimean War, after which it was named?

Rich

Rich brings up a point that reminds me of another "redan" hole, the 11th at Mountain Lake.  The elevation drop from tee to green is significant making a traditional running right to left shot very difficult to pull off.  Does the shape of the green complex alone make this a "redan" hole or should the entirety of the hole be judged?  Does this hole have enough drop to be considered a "drop shot" par 3?  Can a "redan" hole ever be considered a "drop shot" par 3?

John,

The 9th at Chambers Bay is 80 feet downhill. 150 feet seem extreme for Stone Eagle. Google Earth has it from 1050 ft down to 995 ft.
I know Google Earth can get it wrong, but 150 feet seems unbelievable.

Woburn (Dukes). The 3rd hole is a sharply downhill 134 yard par 3 which featured on TV as part of the British Masters and other events for quite a few years.

Hermitage (Dublin), 10th hole is a par-3 down a steep hill with the River Liffey waiting behind the green. http://www.hermitagegolf.ie/course_2/overview/

On both holes, it is quite hard to get back to the hole, so a lot of players end up with longish putts from the front.

More here than I imagined. Tony Roberts and Michael Bartlett covered their favorites in GOLF'S FINEST PAR-3s, a good coffee table book. I found my copy and all are covered here. Thanks!

Cleopatra at Jasper
9th at Chambers Bay
9th at Merion, 13th
maybe 10 at Pacific Dunes, they other ones at Bandon area Bandon Trails 17 and Old Mac 8
Sagebrush as 4 and 10, 4 with the better backdrop of Nicola Lake
12 at The Oregon Club
The steepest one I have played is the 12th at Mountain View in Boring, OR (an official sister city of Dull, Scotland) TRUISM

Do you really think 13 at Merion fits the description?

No, my mind was foggy with that one

First I am sorry that I can't figure out how to size the photo correctly  >:(

But, this is the 17th hole at my course--Rivermont CC.  It is about a 110 foot drop in elevation to a 10,000 sq. ft. green.  Tees are 205 (plays 160), 175, 140 and 90 yards.

This is also the "famous" Evil Knievel hole where he did in fact drive a golf cart over the ladies tee.  I think Golf Digest reported it years back--my father was in the group and the "legend" became that he tried to "jump" the cart onto the green.

The truth was they were playing and as usual, alcohol was involved in his game.  In the cart was his (first) wife Linda and an almost empty bottle of Wild Turkey.  The cart path serpentines down from tee to green (think of a mini Lombard Street in San Fran).  Anyway, he approaches the first curve coming from 16 green way too fast.  In a smart move to avoid flipping the then three-wheeled EZ-GO, he avoids making the sharp turn and instead drives off the end of the forward tee.  He and his wife managed to not get thrown out of the cart and no one was hurt.

He could be a pain in the ass but he did come to my second grade "show and tell" day at Vanderlyn Elementary in 1974 and would come watch me play baeball sometimes too--he was good with kids and in 1974 he was pretty cool to eight year olds!

Hi Garland,

I could be wrong about that.  I'm speaking from memory, as I remembered someone saying somewhere it was 150 feet down.  It's way down there, but I don't think it plays downhill more than the 9th hole at Chambers Bay.  For me, the hole plays about 30-35 yards less than the stated distance.

I agree with Forrest's original post about 7 at Pebble Beach. It's famous because it's on tv every year and then when the US Open is played there. If ANGC had a "drop shot par3" it would be more famous.Same goes for TPC Sawgrass.  All the other par3s mentioned may be very good but not "most famous" or even just "famous" to the general public.

I will say that the 3rd at Ventana Canyon Mountain referenced above created quite stir in the golfing world when it was built.

The 77 yard #7at Pocono Manor is certainly famous and a significant downhill shot. Half wedges downhill are difficult

# 12 at Roxciticus is a real drop shot.

Probably difficult to impossible to hit the tee from the green, with any club, including driver

Is there another course with three major drop shots besides FarmLinks in AL?

#17 - 145 from this tee box

#8 - 220 yards from this tee box

# 5 - 210 yards from this tee box (steepest one I've ever seen!)

A couple good'ies down under are 4 at Titirangi and 11 at NSW

From memory there quite a few in Ireland - too many for my liking.

In terms of famous holes - I'd say Pebble, ANGC and SFGC

We could list out every drop shot par 3 we've played or we could comment on those that are famous - and then those that are most famous - Hermitage - Old works - Radrick park - are these famous? Sorry to be a bore :)

Gee, I guess I shoulda mentioned one in some remote part of the US that only two people here have ever played and which nobody else has access to, rather than a well known (at least to Irish players) established club just outside Dublin.

Sorry to have bored.

I'm not entirely confident of what constitutes a drop shot, but the most famous short hole with a serious drop in elevation I can think of is #13 at Notts.

Ciao

Sean,

Perhaps not as famous as it should be?  ;D

A simple matter of 240yards from the back tees into the prevailing wind...

View from the tee

And couple of shots from the Boys Championship last year

Haha sorry, I was being cranky!

The 10th at Hermitage is probably the most famous drop-down par three in Ireland. The fact that it is virtually unknown by members of this DG is no surprise, considering that most (but thankfully not all) members on this DG do not consider 2nd or 3rd tier courses when they visit Ireland.

I'll throw another "famous" par three onto the mix; the 2nd at the James Braid designed Grange GC in Dublin.

Some more examples -

220 yd 13th at Bristol and Clifton which drops about 70 ft

170 yd 5th at Broadway, about a 100 ft drop

140 yd 13th at Worcester, about 70 ft drop

170 yd 18th at Church Stretton, drops away forever

170 yd 4th at Clevedon drops about 100ft

Windermere has three significant droppers, the 200 yd 10th, the 140 yd 12th and the 180 yd 15th

Drop shot par-3's, not really a favourite type of of mine but one every now and then is okay for a bit of variety and they are usually pretty memorable.

All the best

The 11th at NSW? If we're categorizing this as a drop-shot par 3, this thread has hit rock-bottom. (Although not from a very great height.)

The third at Ventana Canyon is only 100 yards, yet in some Tour funky event there in mid 80's (?), three out of 8 players dumped tee shots into the ravine. Ray Floyd had to wait about 20 minutes to try a three foot birdie putt and was almost jumping out of his skin waiting  :o

#7 at Wolf Creek (NV) is a monster in a small canyon, with water left, back and right
#7 at Lehigh. Very downhill, thus ough to judge distance. Scary to be wrong with the creek fronting.
And #7 at Sleepy Hollow. A rare reverse Redan that is very downhill and works beautifully with the terrain
