Hello Everyone,

I was honored to be admitted to the group in July but haven't taken time to introduce myself to the group, so here goes.

I'm 31 years old and live in Fresno, CA with my wife and young daughter.  I am a member at Fort Washington Golf & Country Club which was built in 1923 by Willie Watson around the same time that he was doing Orinda CC and Olympic.  From my understanding, the golf course has remained relatively consistent with the original design.  It's really the only Golden Age club in our area which was one of the main reasons I decided to join.

I've been fortunate to play a lot of golf in Northern California and the Monterey Peninsula (favorite courses played are San Francisco Club and Spyglass Hill) over the years but really only started to think critically about golf course architecture from a design perspective since reading the book "Dream Golf" a couple years ago.  That led to reading "Anatomy of a Golf Course" by Mr. Doak and it's been a bit of a spiral since then.

I hope to be part of the lively discussion and look forward to meeting and playing golf with fellow members soon.

Cheers!

Jason Wakefield

Welcome!

"The Fort" is one of, if not my favorite undiscovered course in CA.

Great piece of property; it may have the best undulations in the state. Few negatives (rough lines, water feature adjacent to clubhouse) but you're very lucky to play there.

Sunnyside CC in your area is a Bell Sr. effort, for anyone interested in his solo work it is for the most part intact and an absolute must see.
You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?

Agreed on the #14 greenside water feature, I've always seen it as a blemish.

I've played a lot of golf at Sunnyside CC as well and wholeheartedly agree.  It opened in 1906 and is built on a very flat piece of land but it's very well done and has a great membership.  When deciding on a club to join, I considered both Sunnyside and The Fort and chose FWCC because of proximity and the undulations you mentioned.

If you ever come through this area, I'd love to tee it up at one or the other.

Jason-

Welcome from the Bay Area!  Like Jon Spaulding I think the Fort (as well as Del Paso since its recent redo) are "hidden gems" in California.

Wayne,

I haven't had the chance to play Del Paso but will add it to my list of Sacramento courses to play.  Thanks for saying hello!

Jason, welcome aboard.  I play at Orinda CC but unfortunately I've never seen Ft Washington...hope someday to change that.

Have fun here.

There is a Bailey on the BBC shipping forecast here in the UK but no GJville either. Maybe the UK has something against first names ::)

Good decision on the Fort; a better golf course on better property than Sunnyside.

The latter is very interesting to me due to the Charlie Seaver connection; his story growing up at LACC, the connection to George Thomas, then moving to the Fresno area is fascinating. I have to imagine that the Bell work at Sunnyside was a function of his involvement with both clubs.

Also, his son Tom was a decent baseball player, one of my favorites despite his college decision.

At this point in time, both courses offer (arguably) the best remaining examples of each architect's work.

Welcome from another Nocal GCAer in Sacto. If you ever get up here send me a message if you'd like a game. I have played Sunnyside in an NCGA event and one east in the hills by JMiller but have missed the Fort. Look out for upcomming Kings Putter tournies in Cali in the future.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

Thanks Kevin.  Same for me with Orinda CC.  I have friends who have played the course and had great things to say about it but I've never played.  You're welcome at Fort anytime you'd like to play.

This is #17 and one of my favorite holes on the course.  Shortish 1 shot hole.

Thanks for saying hello Tim, I'll take you up on that.  I would be very interested in playing in events with the group.  Are there any planned for the remainder of this year?

Welcome Jason.

Hope you find the site and all within as fascinating as I do.

Btw, for the sake of clarification, Jon was referring to Wakefield in the UK, but I'm sure you're much nicer than Wakefield is!  ;D

Jon,

Really just joking.  ;D

Paul,

I am sure that Jason is no where near as grim as Wakefield :D but it could have been far worse, he might have been called Manchester ;D.

Just kidding Duncan :)
