I think #5 is the Addy's 16th.  I will guess #10 is one of the new Carne holes.

Haven’t played it but this is what I hope Ballyliffen Old looks like. Gorgeous.

Hole 1

That look of playing in high dunes is most attractive and reminds me of Rossapenna Sandy Hills, but can’t recall a hole like that.

Hole 6:

PS Sean you’re cheating.

PPS I really hate it when it turns out I’ve played one and couldn’t recognise it, and I’ve got that feeling about this thread!

The third photo might be the par 3 third at Liphook.

I reckon number 9 is the course in Copenhagen that Anders did a very nice photo tour of. The course in the Royal Deer Park. I can't quite remember it's name and, being a good boy, I haven't used the search engine to try to find the thread. Number 10 is the 1st hole on the new nine at Carne.
All the best

Sean beat me to it but I immediately recognized The Addington's 16th at #5.  I also saw the Principal's Nose and Double Plateau at Yale in #8 as Mark identified.  And I'll never forget the photo tour of the Copenhagen course that, for me, is one of the most unique looking courses I remember seeing.

The only original guess I have left is that I thought of Walton Heath when I saw #2?

I love these exercises by the way!

OK,

Correctly identified so far:

Hole 1:
Hole 2: West Sussex 16th (not 17th Brian)
Hole 3: Boston GC 12th
Hole 4:
Hole 5: Addington 16th
Hole 6: Rosapenna Old 12th
Hole 7: Royal Ashdown Forest 5th
Hole 8: Yale 17th
Hole 9: Copenhagen GC (it is the 2nd hole)
Hole 10: Carne (1st on new nine / 13th on composite)

#4 isnt the fourth at Diamanteis it with #5 green in the background..looks like two many bunkers around the green.

Hole 1:

I keep looking at this one and that worries me that I have played it.  Anyway it looks a lot of fun.

Putting on my Deerstalker I observe,

On this side of the water I see foliage, could be a clump of Dracaena which suggests somewhere in the Gulf stream,  like SW Ireland. (If this is Dooks I'm hiding from the forum for the next week).  Nothing comes to mind.

The Dunes on the other side of the water are impressively large.  So I go with a hole from the third  9 , the one's I haven't played at , Castlerock which I've heard include some of the best there.  That makes the water the Bann with Portstewart GC in the background?

Guy,

Well done with the 7th at Falsterbo

Tony,

Afraid not with No.1 (the sole remaining unidentified photo)... Pretty sure you haven't played it (you will be relieved to know)... But there are at least two posters on this thread who have...

Is No. 1 North West? Those mountains in the background (especially the flat one in the middle which could be Muckish) look familiar. That could be Lough Swilly in the background with the sun in ithe west? The high ground to the right confuses me as I though there were no hills at NW.

Jeff Warne and myself have played it.

No idea what hole it is, but the undulations are nice.

Final Guess

Strandhill GC and by clever Camera work you've managed to avoid getting Ben Bulben in the background?

Perhaps if you'd said Knocknarea rather than Ben Bulben, I would've given you half marks... It is indeed the marvellous 5th hole at Strandhill.

I was there a few weeks ago - but didn't play the course - and looked across from the clubhouse to that fairway; it just looked so crumpled and amazing. Can't believe I didn't recognise it.  :-[

For those considering heading to the Emerald Isle for Buda 2105 I'd just add that if the current plans come through and we finish at Enniscrone on the Monday, my intention is to head for Strandhill on the Tuesday. All Welcome.

Northwest didn't come to mind, but since i aced #7, I don't have too many memories of anything about the place ;) ;D

Strandhill looks awesome. How new is it? I don't recall other mentions of it in picture books, etc. Unfortunately Google Earth doesn't have good pics either.

How can it be that close to County Sligo and go completely under the radar? Or, it is just me and my ignorance?

Yes Garland - Being bumped by one year was bad enough but now they've knocked us back another hundred.

Strandhill is an unsung hero in my book - But it's not all as good as that photo. It really is a fun experience though - sure it's not a great course, it's quite crude in places and could be significantly "improved" but it's such a mixed bag of holes, topography and ideas that the course just makes you smile. There is nothing samey about it whatsoever.

Mark Ferguson (whose thoughts I learned to appreciate on his last visit over) had it as a highlight... Tom Doak recently walked the course and was underwhelmed... I say go there not expecting a course of the same quality as Rosses Point, Enniscrone and Carne and then you can make your own mind up and will likely be pleasantly surprised...

Ally, do you think scale and proportionality are given too much importance when assessing the merits of a course?

Personally, I think the topography and look of the holes is more interesting at Strandhill than at Rosses point and it's more beautiful. And the best individual shots trump the best at Sligo in terms of interest levels / being unusual. Granted it has a couple of duds, and it doesn't have the same "big" feeling but that didn't really impact on my feelings towards the place. As Sean Arble puts it - "out of the box architecture". To me, that counts for a lot, rather than a succession of solid, conventional holes, all proportionate etc on a big site - which can get dull. I would put it in the category of "not to be missed" when in the region.  Especially considering the price.

Brian - I actually think scale is a big thing and is one of the reasons that the truly great courses are in fact, truly great. As for the "out of the box" architecture, I don't really buy that at Strandhill. It's just a mix of different design and construction techniques... Some of the later work was simply knocking the top off a dune to form a green platform for instance... Whilst some of the earlier work was to do nothing at all...

BUT somehow it all falls together in to a really enjoyable experience and I agree, one with a whole ton of different individual shots and small and unusual features...

I've played it a few times recently and have to say, I love it... Quick and fun....

Strandhill is a step down in quality from Carne, Ennsicrone and especially Rosses Point, but that is tough company to keep and the course is plenty good enough without having to be great.  I would say its a Doak 5 whereas Carne is probably a solid 6, Ennsicrone a 6/7 (I would say 6) and Sligo a 6/7 (I would say 7).  It was a huge surprise for me as nobody I heard talked Strandhill up.  Although, most of my party was not terribly impressed.  I would definitely go back if in the area and I suspect my opinion of Strandhill would rise.  I didn't give it the Arble star because I am not convinced many would fully appreciate Strandhill's merits, but it was my second favourite in the area behind Enniscrone.  One still gets the sensation of playing a classic Irish links and at a price which makes sense.  There are a lot of very good holes; #1, 2, 4, 6, 12, 14 & 18.  The 8th is just a matter of cutting some rough down to be an excellent short 4.
