Mackenzie Society?
« on: August 11, 2002, 11:43:03 AM »
After recently visiting University of Michigan Golf Course I had a look see at some original Mac% Maxwell blue prints ar well as some old photos with Charlie Green.
Charlie ,a long -time employee and historian told me of a snub by the Mackenzie Society when he suggested a meeting.
Anyone familair with this group and or what their mission might be?

Nick:
Never heard of the McKenzie society but it sounds like it could be similar to the Donald Ross Society.
Cheers,
Dave

The Mackenzie Society is not for individuals, it is some affiliation of courses by Mackenzie. I know that Crystal Downs, Cypress Point and Pasatiempo are "members" and I presume other Mackenzie courses are too. Contact Fred Mueller at CD who is the person that informed me of the above info I stated.

I believe that Tom Doak has addressed this group on a couple of occasions.  I also think that Agusta National and maybe the Jockey Club (in Argentina) may be the only private clubs that are not members.

Maybe if the members of Augusta National paid the fee still owed Dr MacKenzie, the society would let them join!  Just kidding I guess  :P

It's funny, Mr, Whitten gets so much street cred, but under the microscope, does he really deserve it? Examples abound of his ideas either being just plain bad, or poorly thought out.

He was a member of this forum for a very short time. One thread, if I recall correctly. He was asked questions and viewed them as vitriol. Odd, since his background is an attorney. Or should I say prosecutor?

Ron Whitten is an easy target, as is anyone who has written millions of words on a single subject. Some critics start crucifying an author once they get past "The" in an article/essay/book, etc.

Jim, I'm not considering his writing (because I've barely read him) as much as I am his advice he gives to courses. I've heard about them more and more, and have experience with one. His input and ideas at Erin Hills are all gone and he's disowned any design credit.

I recall the original thread was during New Mexico's 15 minutes of fame. He wrote in his critique of Twin Warriors that the clubhouse should've been positioned near the coolest natural feature, and spiritual spot, on the entire property. The parking lot, clubhouse, and staging areas were the antithesis of serenity and should have had no business near the "Snakehead" ridge.

Adam,
The last thing I read about EH was this:

Here is a collection of stunning phots from EH:

The last thing of Ron's I've read was this:

I don't believe RW is infallible, I also don't believe his 'street creds' are in jeopardy.  ;)
