Ballyneal redux: A pictorial!!! (18th hole posted)
« on: August 31, 2013, 02:29:38 PM »
An extensive thread (http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,35401.0.html)
was posted after my first visit to Ballyneal, but when my host had to abandon me for a few days during my return trip last year, I took advantage of good light and a fancier camera to capture a fairly comprehensive and superior set of images.

Here is the 1st hole.

Kyle;

Any chance you could give some yardages for scale for those of us who never played it?

Doug, I doubt if anyone could come up with a course, anywhere, where yardage is more immaterial. Between the firmness, and the wind, the course, and each hole, are as elastic as it gets, pertaining to yardage.
Throw in no tee markers, where the honor determines the teeing ground, and you'll have a hard time figuring out how far you played.

Both openers are par 4's. The opener is shorter and plays relatively flat, while the second, has serious turbo boosts that are accentuated by being downhill as shown here.

Doug,
As I stated in the first post, I reviewed yardages, etc. in an older thread.

Very nice Kyle.  Early morning pics?  Camera details?

There will be some sunset shots as well. ;) 54 holes/day x 3 days affords a couple of hours in optimal conditions. I also took a few cross country strolls through the yuccas (ouch!) to capture some angles rarely seen.

These were all taken with a Canon T2i with the stock lens and a UV filter.

Doug:

I've made a couple of trips to Ballyneal. I hit it about 270 off the tee in typical midwest conditions. The first hole is usually a driver and wedge for or sand wedge for me. The second I have hit anywhere from driver-3-wood to driver-wedge depending on the wind and whether or not my drive catches the speed slot.

Kyle, or whoever said it above, is right that yardage is immaterial at this course. I asked my caddy for it the first time around. After that, in a rare occurence, I really didn't want to know anymore. It was more fun not having it out there. You do kind of need it the first time around though as the scale of the land makes it really hard to judge the distances the first time around.

Love the pics, Kyle.

I'll go ahead and second yardage being pretty immaterial at Ballyneal...  After my round, I asked my caddie what he thought the course played yardage-wise (since he moved me around the teeing grounds quite a bit) and he guessed that we played it between 6700 and 6800 yards.  I can honestly say it would have been just as fun from almost any yardage.  The elasticity of the course makes for a great experience if you play it more that once.

Kyle,
These pictures are fantastic.  I especially appreciate the view from behind #2 green shows how much room long right has.  I've missed this green short left 2/2 times.

I agree wholeheartedly that yardage is secondary at Ballyneal. I just wanted to understand how far I was looking, for example, to reach the fairway in #1. I was ever a short hitter and I gather that would be considered if I had played there.

Of all the courses I never got to play that I regret losing, Ballyneal was the one I most regret. This looks more like my 'golf for joy', no  competition, philosophy made manifest. Heaven upon Earth.

Thanks Kyle for these enticing pix. Makes it almost come alive. Can never help but think 'I could try ........ from right here. The land contours beg you to hit low runners a lot, don't they?

I'm telling you, Doug, that other thread has what you want.

The first tee carry is ~210 over the bunker, less right of that.

I have twin infants sons impeding my Ballyneal dreams -- that's much better than an office job, I'll reckon.

Is there three better holes in succession at Ballyneal than 2,3,4?  I don't think so

Interesting question. I would probably go 12, 13, 14.
So bad it's good!
