I cannot believe Louisiana didn't have any cities listed - that list is bogus

I'll nominate Anaheim/Santa Ana, CA as the worst.  Population of around 750,000 in a county of 3,000,000 and there is nothing of interest anywhere close.

This is ridiculous, New York courses aren't true links, may not use cold season grasses, and all have maintenance budges over 1mm. What hack wrote this?!  ;D

IMO Chicago should be #4. Boston and Philly should be tied for #2. They both have 5 top shelf courses and a deep bench of at least 10 more Ross or Flynn designs that if in Chicago would be top 10. It's all about terrain and in Chicago only 3 very good courses have any significant movement to the property. Where is Minneapolis / St. Paul ? Very underrated city for golf  IMO

I agree with Neil - aren't the Philly courses closer to NYC than NGLA and Shinny?

Monterey is closer to SF than NYC is to some of these courses.

Philly is #1.

It's more than just the world-class golf courses, it's also the golf culture.  From the GAP matches to The Bausch Collection to the grassroots effort to rehab Cobbs Creek, we just "live" golf.

Case in point - the toughest 9 holes in Philly are virtually unknown outside of town - Flynn's "C" nine at Huntington Valley.
Case in point - GAP play days, where you have a chance to play Philly's best.
Case in point - Philly has courses designed by the great old guys (Flynn, Ross, Tillinghast, etc), and the great new guys (Hanse, Doak, C&C)

I think Chicago is misplaced. Philadelphia should be number two, no question about it. Greater Philadelphia is crawling with great courses and if NY gets to include the outlieing LI courses, then Philadelphia should be including places like Hidden Creek, Pine Valley, and Plainfield, not to mention Lancaster, and  Lehigh.

Its a bit of a stretch calling NGLA part of NYC.  I mean, don't folks with second homes on LI have them to get away from the city?  It must be a 2 hour drive in good traffic from NGLA to Central Park.  Thats just about the same thing as saying Sandwich is part of London.  I don't know of any person who would consider this to be true.

Its 91 miles from NYC to Southampton and 96 to Philadelphia. I think this rating was devised by Michael O'Leary from Ryanair!

Sean it's not that long ago that RStG held their committee meetings in London as all their members live there.

By that measure, Portmarnock is one of Belfast finest's golf courses.

RCD is practically within the city limits by comparison!

The qualification surely isn't just golf, it's also distance and, as Brian suggests, there's another factor to consider as well. For example,
St Andrews has a Cathedral, Dornoch has a Cathedral, but the nearest Cathedral to Sandwich on the Kent coast is 15 miles away. Satnav anyone!
All the best

Exactly, counting Shinny and National as NYC is like making CPC as SF.

Cleveland being behind Columbus and esp. Denver is goofy. Cleveland has Canterbury, the Country Club (in Pepper Pike), Kirtland, Pepper Pike CC, the under-the-radar Mayfield, Brookside (if you include Canton, hardly a stretch under the criteria for New York), and the Firestone complex if that's your thing. Plus Sleepy Hollow, Hawthorne Valley, and Manakiki on the public/muni front.

Columbus has Scioto, Muirfield, the Golf Club, Double Eagle and .....?

Denver has Cherry Hills and ......?

I played a small sampling in Chicago this summer and am heading to Philly this October.  I'll make the call when I'm done.  Either one will likely be #1 as NYC does not include LI.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Pinehurst isn't one of the top 10 golf cities? They must be factoring in more than the golf.I don't see any other way Denver makes the list.
