« on: August 21, 2013, 08:23:08 PM »
Current itinerary is:
     Day One: Sebonack
     Day Two: Shinnecock & National
     Day Three: Friars Head

Where do you play?  In what order?  Put access concerns aside and let me hear your rota.

Thanks.

I have been lucky enough to play Friars Head and NGLA.  Whatever you decide to do will be wonderful.  I am insanely jealous, but that's okay.

You're going to the dance and there are four beautiful women waiting just for you.

Doesn't matter which one you dance with first or the the order In which you do so.

Enjoy!

I'm just wondering if I've identified the best case scenario.

Of the courses listed, in what order would you play them (for the first time)?

Thanks for the help.

Wade, if you're going to play all four in three days, it really doesn't matter!   Honest!   Any order, any combination will do.

Having played neither, I would hit Maidstone over Sebonack.  Unless, of course, you plan to both walk on and between all the courses you play.

Also, if you have time for an extra 9, Sag Harbor and Shelter Island ("Goat Hill") might provide some local flavor.  Don't know if anyone in good conscience could bounce any of your four for these, or even Southampton, but variety is the spice of life.

Easy Question...

Day 1: Fly in with an afternoon round at Friars Head as it is closest to airports. Dinner in Southampton.

Day 2: Morning round at Maidstone. Late lunch at Sebonack with drinks following the round. Best place to view a Peconic Bay sunset.

Day 3: Morning round at Shinnecock. Best lunch in golf at NGLA, followed a round to cap off the trip. Magical!

The Bridge has a stellar clubhouse also...2nd highest point on Long Island.

Wade,

I played 3 of your 4 last month.  I missed out on Shinnie.

It does not matter what order you do them in, it will be magical.

Have a wonderful time.

Wade,

I'd start backward so as to have enough time once near Sebonack to reach out the good doctor Gene and get the names & numbers of some of those supermodel whirling dervishes. Beats the shit out of any Doak/Nicklaus design in my book.....and I like Sebonack ;D

I think you should play Shinnecock & NGLA on the last day...

Then quit playing golf because it doesn't get much better than that.

Those courses are all so good.

Shinnecock would have to be number one for me, followed by National and then Friars.

That being said, if I would take National and Friars both 7-3 over Shinnecock.

Shinnecock is just so damn difficult.  But, if it's just one trip I'd say it has to be first.

It's hard to imagine going wrong no matter what you play in Long Island.

I guess if you would want an order for your first time, based on the courses you listed, I would go Sebonack (which I haven't played), Shinnecock, Friars, and National.  The finish at Friars and National make you feel like there is nowhere else you would rather be on the entire planet.  Though Shinnecock's is just as good, I would finish at Friars and National because you at least have a decent chance to score well while at Shinnecock you're pretty much screwed unless you hit every shot perfectly.

Wade,

Two years ago I had a trip in this order and have zero complaints.

Day 1 - Friar's Head / Shinnecock
Day 2 - Southampton
Day 3 - Sebonack
Day 4 - walked National

You'll have an insane amount of fun no matter the order

Bethpage is worth playing. Both the Black, and the Red.

However, I think that as you're playing the Black, you won't be able to help yourself start thinking about how the course is presented from the USGA's perspective instead of what the design intent was. Especially on #5 if the pin is tucked left.

There's an aerial photo in the clubhouse of the whole course. There are very few changes from the original design which is a plus in my book.

My host says not to play Bethpage Black.  Conditions vary, pace of play is awful, and it can be a slog (according to him).

I just can't imagine going all the way there and playing a course with such a disappointing 18th hole.

He didn't mention the Red at all.

I guess my current question is: If we're playing the four courses in my first post in three days, which two do we combine on the same day?  There are a couple of responses along those lines so far, which are very helpful and appreciated.

All true points re: Black. I think if you make the choice to play it, consider the Red. You'll like what you see of it from the Black. I liked the Black, I think it's worth going to see/play, and you did ask about it subsequently.

I would not make the trip to play it if the others are options. You can ALWAYS get on the Black if you want to make the effort to do so.

I'm more disappointed that you didn't notify the Treehouse that you made the Walker Cup team. This is obviously what you're adding onto your trip, no?

Wade, I don't think the order makes any difference. Lunch at NGLA is pretty awesome but remember to bring a sport coat.  I haven't played Friar's Head but know the others pretty well.  It is amazing that three courses in such close proximity could be so vastly different.

Wade,

Without question, the winner of the George Cup should get an automatic invite.

I think there will be ample support for this.
