a Major.

And I thought that I couldn't disagree more with that statement.

I don't get it.

Are 20 yard wide tree lined fairways flanked by deep rough the new standard for presenting a challenge to the best golfers in the world ?

Did anyone prefer Oak Hill to Muirfield this year ?

As to the "shot of the day", on the 18th hole, did anyone else notice Jason grabbing the ass of the woman in the white dress.
That gets my vote.
It's also probably the only shot I could hit on that course.

i'll fault the cameraman there for pulling away to a wide shot.

For me, the arse-grab was the highlight of all four days.

Easily the most boring major, producing the most unexciting champion, on the most unimaginative golf course....a perfect match of participants.

Just a mere glimpse of LACC North, for those of you who've yet to play it, should provide adequate contrast between a wonderful, charming and creative parkland-style gem and a brute of rough, narrow fairways and heavily cuffed greens. 'nough said!

I also think that OH, while a tough course, isn't my idea of a great course.  It is just too one-dimensional.  Yes, it demands the player hit precise shots, and long is its own reward, but I was not impressed that there were so many funky and dicey lies surrounding greens in the extreme rough that seemed to me to reward the luckiest clunker of the ball out of that stuff, rather than the most skilled with a wedge.  I almost felt like just about any mid handicapper could take a clumpy shot and expect about the same result.  Some got lucky, some of course were skillful just because those guys are good.  But, you can take the best wedge players in the world like Phil or Tiger, or the garden variety tour pro, and have a clunk at it and expect relatively same result, it seems to me.

I question whether playing a precise shot up a 20-25yard wide fairway in the 280-310yard zone, and trying to keep it on the most favorable side to where the pin is set, with a margin of error of a yard or two, to run into spinach and hay, and factor in ubiquitous overhanging trees, makes for a 'great golf course'.

All that said, a fine striker of the ball, for the very same reasons of precision, won the tournament.  It was the same course for everyone.  I just don't like that kind of golf.  I wouldn't even care to play it with half the rough from 6000 yards, actually.

Great 19th hole grab to a firm and fast surface by the Duff.  It gives a whole new dimension to Duffnering.   ;D 8)

Steve,

With the winner and runner-up both bogeying the last two holes, grabbing Amanda was definitely a more worthy highlight.

What I want to know is how do they grow the rough so plush under all those trees?

Actually, I want Oak Hill to keep that a secret...

Pat,

Unquestionably. She clearly had better architecture than the previous 18 holes. ;D

Furyk, the runner-up, only hit 4 fairways.

Is that what we want to see from the best golfers in the world ?

Does that say anything about the golf course ?

How many GIR's did he hit  ?

RE: Lush rough under trees - here in Ohio this time of year usually produces fast and firm conditions. Right now the course is more lush than May 1st most years.

Good point Pat.  And, if one can go back, by how much did Furyk miss those FWs.  As it stands, he missed too many to be a winner.  Yet, if there were just three yards more width, and less overhanging trees by a factor or opening up maybe 10 yards of corridor aloft, and 2/3rds the rough, would the course still identified the best golfer?  I think so.  I think what the course did, was eliminate several of the best golfers, by rub and shave of the greens and surrounds, or hop of the ball by one yard into the rough, and constraint on a shot maker and shaper in the air. It did identify a great striker of the ball, but is the margin of error or victory unrealistic or too close?  It was a tough test, there is a winner, he deserved it, but....  ::)

To clarify, I was the announce. I had stolen into the booth, grabbed the headset and gone wild. I'm typing this with handcuffs.

Before the ass grab, there was the cheek slap by Stricker, when Dufner holed out on two on Friday. Lots of bum this week.

And #SteveLapper, no matter how many times you type it, there was only one spot where the fairway was twenty yards wide. Most were thirty at least, with two cuts of manageable rough on either side.

Never said "twenty-wide." Fairway widths may well have been 30+, but the effective width was significantly narrowed by overhanging trees and semi-dogleg breaks. I appreciate your hometown pride (though I don't share such when it comes to another dull shlog of a once-great ODG-designed, now desecrated, course nearby me in Springfield, NJ ???) but all the pom-poms and glitter dust won't get Oak Hill into the realm of exciting, memorable, and imaginative golf.

Made the assholes at Bethpage look like statesmen. Let's face it, NY golf fans should watch on TV. I'd rather talk the truth about the boorish fans than join the chorus that is bearish on the course, which did its job, by the way.

Yes. This stupid custom of shouting random food items is now out of control.

I don't like Furyk but I was happy to see him angry about it.

John,

Characterizing the Oak Hill fans that way due to a handful of vocal idiots is akin to someone labeling GCA posters as the most self-indulgent on the entire internet based solely on your posts.

If New York fans were really tough, we would read reports tomorrow of spontaneous peer discipline at Oak Hill.

Really Terry...it's more about alcohol policies (something most Chi-town venues freely allow btw)???
