Anyone have any input on Torreon Golf Club, 27 holes by von Hagge, Smelek and Baril?

Is that some legal team from SCU?
You'd make a fine little helper. What's your name?

I believe they just opened another nine to give them 36 holes. I was under the impression the original 18 was von Hagge, but I'm not that familiar with it. Show Low, AZ is relatively difficult to get to unless you really want to get there. I would guess its 3 hrs from Phoenix and 3.5 from Albuquerque minimum.

Ryan,
I would be interested in seeing the photos if you have time to post them, as well as any comments you'd be willing to provide, even if they are less than stellar.

I like the look of the 2nd photo and the last photo. Are there more houses around the course than the photos would indicate?

Andy, its a beautiful golf course minus the awful looking shaping and mounding but its in a great setting. The housing is popping up more and more but it is not very noticeable. The lots are large and the homes are set back deep into the woods (for the most part). Greens are fast, turf is soft. Not my kind of golf course by any means but it sets up well for my left handed draw off the tee.

Ryan,
Have you played any of the other courses up in the higher elevations of Arizona? (Chaparral Pines, The Rim, any of the Flagstaff ones?) I'd be curious how this one compares to any of those. It looks more forgiving than most of them.

Andy, I have not. Thanks for reminding me though  ;D

Torreon is not often mentioned with these guys and I could understand why. Or can I?

From your comments it sounds like its not the same class; I can't really evaluate it on six pictures when they have 36 holes with much confidence otherwise. It looks like it would be worth playing to me.

Forest Highlands Canyon to me is the class of Arizona golf. The Rim, Seven Canyons, and Chaparral Pines are all darn good too so it would not be surprising for Torreon to be a notch below. There's a lot I haven't played; Pine Canyon is supposed to be very strong as well and I haven't been to Tucson at all or Apache Stronghold (can only chip away at the to-do list so quickly!).

I recently spent a few days in a rental villa at Torreon and played both courses on beautiful , sunny, low temperature and low humidity summer days in the White Mountains of Arizona.

www.torreon.com

The Cabin course was first:

Black: 7168y 73.8/143
Blue:  6721y 71.9/138
White:6268y 69.4/130
Gold:  5869y 67.5/126

Mounds, mounds and more mounds. Bunkers, bunkers and more bunkers. 50 or 60. I lost count.  Only the 18th is without one. Many fairways and backdrops framed with a lone tall Ponderosa pine or two.

The second picture above looks liike the second hole, a par5 of 522y from the black tee. I played from the Gold at 451y. A decision must be made on the tee to carry the junk on the right or safely play to the front of the bunkers left. I chose the safe play as it was early in the round.

The Tower course was next:

Black:  7134y 72.6/140
Blue:   6727y 70.7/136
White: 6159y  68.0/128
Gold:    5884y  66.7/125

Same as above concerning mounds and bunkers. 75 bunkers in all. Many  are small pot bunkers.

I played the White tees.

The 5th picture is the 3rd hole at 140y uphill.  My tee shot kicked off a mound on the right stopping 2" from the hole on the far left. I made the putt.  ;D

Both courses feature greens of character, hence the high slope ratings. The fairways were soft. The summer rains were more frequent this year from what I was told. The rough was rough. The greens were fast. Overall, both courses were in very good condition.

A work of art by Von Hagge.

The real estate was not overpowering and set backs were far. Many houses are for sale or rent. The developer controls some villas for rentals for "stay and plays" They are a good deal for a summer getaway from the desert temps and are well done and nicely furnished. It was in the mid 70s daytime and 50s at night. Also, a fall getaway, from what I was told, is great for the scenery and firmer fairways. I just might return. I enjoyed the experience.
